Im thinkin of a 10-12’ sit on top to get started. Just me for now, my wife wouldnt get in one.
Plan on using in small creeks and possibly taking it along on my 20’ cc sometimes. mostly would just be launching in my neighborhhod dock/ramp off the upper wando to do some fishing.
Any ideas on a yak?
Do they have need to be registered? Any CG req’s other than a pfd and sound making device?
*** I have a brand new schwinn rocket full suspension bike to trade for an entry level yak. schwinn select series, not a chain store bike. brand new. ***
figure i’d try to make a trade before dropping $ on another ‘toy’.
I have a Hobie quest for sale. 13.5 feet long, 2 rod holders, seat and a paddle for $550. LEt me know if you are interested. You can paddle it first if you would like.
I started out with, and am still fising a 11.5ft and I love it. I wish i had a bit longer one that was a little more stable but I am still hooked. DolphinDave has a pretty good deal and TO will get you sorted out. I want to upgrade to a Native as soon as the wife will let me spend the cash but for now I love my yak. Be careful you’ll get hooked and won’t want to get back in that boat

Trout,
I just bought my first kayak 2 weeks ago WS Tarpon 140 with angler package. I have to honestly say that it is the best way to be on the water. I have just finished mounting my FF and I am looking forward to many great fishing trips. I found that it is very easy to get use to the sit on top. So don’t settle on just any “starter kayak.” Go ahead and paddle one and go for it. I think you will enjoy the experience.
thanks for the tips. I used a sit-on-top on vacation in jamaica and it felt pretty good, they had tandem ocean kayaks, felt pretty stable. of course there you could see down to the bottom in deep water.
anyone got an old one taking up space in the garage?
I HIGHLY recommend the WS Tarpon 160i. The 140 has a touch more space in the “trunk” but the 160i will get you where you’re going faster and smoother. If I’m taking a lot of stuff with me, like coolers and whatnot, then I take the Native. Otherwise, the Tarpon is the way to go.
the 160 is a fast boat, but while fishing that’s not so much an issue, speed is generally not important. The 140 has more room in the stern and seems to be dryer in big water I do seem to get wetter in the 160, but Could be wrong, may not be used to my 160 yet? Plus I think the older boats where made better…I wish I had my old 140…oh well stuff happens.
