What's a reliable USED 200 hp outboard ?

Got a 96 Evinrude 150 hp carb’d motor - runs great, no issues.

Thinking about bumping up to 200 hp, but have also read lots about issues with these used:
Opti’s from earlier years - avoid
Yami HPDI = good, but complex maintainance
Ficht bad from late 90’s until 2004

Looking for reasonable price, reliable, best performance of the bunch…and if possible, avoid the very worse fuel hogs.

Thanks

Yamaha OX66. Great motor, and there is so much info on them. Gas hog though.

I bought a 1998 200HP Evinrude Ocean Pro 2 years ago and it’s been great. Nothing but maintenance. It loves gas, but it would take a lot of gas to = the price of a new four stroke. I got the motor on a rotten boat for $1000 on craigslist. I believe optimaxes are ok after 2004.

I am getting ready to list a 1996 225 Evinrude Ocean Pro in the classified section that looks and runs like new. Compression over 100psi in all cylinders w/ harness, binnacle and cables. Not to hijack your thread but these were and are great motors, reliable, parts available and easy to work on.

Hey Bennett, I see you found the “other” side… LOL

Can’t help with the motor but you ought to be able to find one pretty reasonable.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

a carbed motor or yamaha ox66 is going to be your best bet
any of the direct injected motors are going to be issues
stick with an OMC and all your rigging is compatible
is it a 20 or 25" shaft?

25" shaft needed.

I got a 2000 Johnson 200 hp for sale. You have to take the boat and trailer too. PM me if you are interested. The price is right.

The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.

Find a well maintained - moderate hour OX66. One of, if not the best 2 stroke ever made.
