Whats in this shrimp?

I caught about a 1/4 cooler last night and cleaned them once I got home. I noticed this shrimp looked weird from the outside, I could see something under the shell. When I went to pop the head off, this blueish white mass was inside of it.

I have never seen this before, I am curious as too what it is.

found three that way from what I have found it is head roe, apparently they also have stomach roe sometimes

Looks like an abscess of some sort. I’ve cut pork loins when I was a meat cutter that would have big white, or green, slimy wads of crap in them.

from SCDNR:

Several diseases are known to affect shrimp. One of the most common is called cotton disease, which is caused by a single cell protozoan parasite called a microsporidian. These tiny animals invade various tissues of the shrimp and can cause the affected areas to appear grey or white. The affected areas may be confined only to the head or the reproductive system. However, the disease is often in the entire musculature resulting in what is commonly called the cotton condition. Cotton disease has been noted in white and brown shrimp but seems to be most common in white shrimp. It is also usually limited to larger individuals, but small shrimp have also become infected. At times the infection rate for severe cases may reach 10 or 15 percent. Minor infection, with shrimp having small specks of diseased tissue, may reach levels of 70 or 80 percent, but these specks are usually isolated to the head. Large individuals with cotton disease often have what appears to be dark blue or black bands across the abdomen. This seems to be an artifact of the disease.

Shrimp with cotton disease are not thought to be harmful if eaten by humans. Because the texture and possibly the flavor of a diseased shrimp is impaired, it is probably best to discard these shrimp.

Barbawang, that seems like what it is. It looked pretty nasty, I hope it does not start showing up more often.

We’ve seen a few of them this year, but not too many. It’s been around since I started shrimping. I haven’t seen any more or any less this year than normal.

It looks like roe to me

I throw that thing away and keep a close eye on the others, where did you catch that thing, in the Sampit up next to the paper mill?

We went out to JI Flats last nit…about held a cooler, and almost ALL of them had this. Was mostly confined to the head, with about 10 with more of it down their “spine.” According to the internets, it’s cotton disease. Isn’t supposed to be harmful to humans if eaten… Hate to dump a whole nights catch, but after seeing is post a couple of weeks back, I spotted it right off when they started landing in the cooler. I guess if I start zombifying, we’ll know where it came from.
