Whats my problem?

So i put in at Remleys point at around 6:15am and fished every boat dock and bank to the end of hobcaw and ended up with nothing (other than a sunburn) by the time i gave up around 11:30. Last year i was consistantly slaying them but this year i have done very poor. All i fish is artificial and i slung it all today (gulp, Zman, DOA on popping cork, topwater badonka donk, suspended plug, Bucktail). Should i switch to live bait and if so how do you rig it up? Only been saltwater fishing for 2 years now so forgive my ignorance.

 Thanks yall!

I don’t know much about that side of the world?.but in the Kiawah/Stono/Wadmalaw areas cut mullet on a carolina rig has been working for reds. And a standard minnow under a float over shells has worked for trout.
Good luck.

see a post on Mud Minnow Madness I did last year

not all locations hold fish each year is what I’ve figured out (mostly for docks). I’ve had docks that held fish all year around for a year or two then never again (especially for reds and sheep). lots of locations I use now are places that I am confident that new maturing groups of reds will “discover” like flats with bottle knecks, docks with creek mouths & oyster mounds around (I call the “trifecta”), and other things I learn here and there on my own.

dedicate a little time during each trip to scout new spots. even when unsuccessful, jot down the conditions, location, time, etc on unsuccessful spots (sometimes those spots are successful but have to try different baits, tides, time, etc.). very rewarding discovering new spots & trends

Well i gave it another go on Friday morning and told myself i would only try places i had never been which ended up being foster creek and around drum island. Lucked up and had 9 trout total in about 3 hours all on Popping cork and DOA shrimp. Learned some great new spots thanks for the advise yall!

Very nice. Time on the water is all you need to figure it out. Well done.

When I want you to have an opinion, I’ll give it to you…

Now that’s a nice outcome to a nice story. Lots of good advise. Glad to hear that, in spite of the hot weather, the trout are still biting. Did you get a water temp?

Welcome to my world of being unsuccessful fishing areas that hold many but then there are none. One would have to not depend on what they once done at a spot and venture into unknown and continue doing what you’ve done and you’ll be right back in the saddle or the zone of fishing. I fish MM with a 1/4 oz round red jighead and have decent success with most of the species. I fish it as if it’s a grub or paddle tail swim bait and it works for me.
