whats needed legally for a kayak in sc?

not 100% but if i end up being here a little bit longer im looking into getting a kayak. im aware ill need to buy a PFD too but what all will i need to be legal on the water…do i have to have it registered or anything?

You might get a better response posting this in the kayak section. But, a non-motorized vessel does not have to be registered. As for equipment, someone in the yak section could help you out. If you have never caught a fish from a kayak, you are in for a whole new experience. There is a Meet & Fish this Sunday at Copahee (see kayak section). If you wanted to try it, you could always rent one and give it a shot. Talk to DolphinD at Time Out Sports in Mt. P.

life jacket and a whistle,

reg only if it has a motor

sounds good thanks! gotta work on sunday so cant make that and although ive used a kayak before ive never actually fished from one…however im definately no stranger to fishing from a canoe if its any similar. biggest thing i was wondering is if it needs registered or not but i gues not. thanks!

From taking a team building trip. Watch your tides and don’t go against them coming and going! Also had a couple of Dolphin scare the crap out of me.

By the time you get a new assignment, you’re going to miss S.C.! From your other posts seems you are making the best of the lowcountry.

I would imagine a 28" + red would make a good trolling motor for a kayak.

Nuke, my canoe may be available. I will know for sure Friday since the other one I ordered is supposed to get here soon.

I know with this canoe, you are required to have a life jacket for all on board, and a whistle. I carry a throwable but I cannot recall if it’s required or not.

LMAO yup i know what paddling against current is like and yup ive learned how to properly use a tide chart too! appreciate the offer matt but ive seen a couple models i really like that are a couple feet shorter than the canoe and already have 3 rod holders built into them along with the covered storage and paddle holder. since ill be moving around during my career something small and light will be a must. fred i would love to see just how well a 28" red will pull a kayak…perhaps some spiny dogfish in breach inlet/folly lighthouse too. only been around 2 years but yes im definately going to miss charleston whenever i have to go. heres a list of just some the things ive done/learned down here.

caught my share of the big 3 inshore fish
caught a 5 foot blacktip from the surf
caught a 3 foot redfish from the surf
survived a 12 foot gator following the canoe i was paddling…LOL!!!
reef fishing for sheephead and 3,450,378,453 of the endangered BSB
shot 2 nice bucks and a doe
went on 2 deer dog hunts (didnt get to shoot though)
took down a couple wild hogs with a knife (doin it again jan 19)
survived face near rattlesnake while tracking wounded deer
netted a nice pile of shrimp for the freezer (no bait)
survived eating the hottest tuna roll at bushidos
learned that grits are culinary duck tape…works with anything!

Lol I guarantee you that canoe weighs less than some of those polyethylene kayaks.

Now that being said, a kayak is going to be a bit easier to handle in the water alone, but only a bit.

Now. Taking down wild hogs with a knife? Somehow I’ve missed this story.

ha that one was a guided dog hunt after hogs and the guide specifically told me not to bring a gun…just a big knife. just out of curiosity…im sure plenty of the natives have seen northerners come and go many times before…how well have i actually adapted compared to most northerners adapting to fish/hunt the lowcountry?

Around here the Northerners don’t adapt, they just take over and recreate the mayhem here that they tried to leave up there.

Welcome to the South! haha

idratherbefishing: been here about 2 years and loved every bit of it! even back north id love it for paddling down the rocky shallows
in the river for smallmouth and all kinds of upground reservoirs and bass ponds.

matt: come to think of it the most popular way to take out pigs these days is by launching birds from a slingsot at em…that one might be slightly less frowned upon lol.
