Had an 8’ gator crash the side of a jonboat when we were motoring down a creek about 7 ft across and it was on the bank. Initially thought it was coming IN the boat. This was bass fishing at Camp Bryan in Havelock, NC.

My wife of 20 years (tommorow) bugs me all the time to TAKE HER fishing. She is a good angler and never complains when were in the boat. Good woman.
Congratulations!! I will be ten years in 2010 for my wife and I.
Although my wife does not particularly enjoy fishing, she does enjoy being out on the water. She did offshore sailing in college (where we met) whereas I did Power Squadron. Over the years she has come to terms with my fishing addiction. I always tell here it is better that I’m out fishing rather than some other things…

Well, not quite fishing, but was in my J-bote Sea Duck hunting 3 or so seasons ago. I had layed out one long string of decoys, then had the other stretched out and cleated of the port/stern cleat while I got the weight ready.
Now I’m sitting on the rear bench seat turned to my left about 1/2 way when all of a sudden a 5-6ft Shark(Nose looked like a Mako) came
out of the water like a dam missle, got about head high and was headed straight for me and kicking side to side while in mid-air. I could see the water droplets falling off his pectoral fins, but I was too slow/stunned to even think about moving.
As he continued towards the boat in the air, it looked like he was going to strike my left shoulder/neck area, but(Thank Goodness) in his normal ‘swimming’ action, he luckily kicked head/tail back away from my head, passed by me, and on the way back down landed on the side of the boat w/ a big Bang and fell back into the water about mid-boat.
I realy did not feel like duck hunting anymore that morning:8ball:

Years ago I south Florida was fishing at a place called Sawgrass park, we were in a 10 ft Jonboat with a sears gamefisher motor on the back (more like a lawnmower engine with a prop attached ) we were about 3 miles down a canal when a storm started to blow in , we couldn’t beat the storm in and it started to hail. We found a small dry patch of ground threw the motor and gear on it, jumped in the water rolled the boat upside down and got under it, not sure how long the storm lasted but it felt like forever, and the noise from the hail on the boat was almost as bad as getting hit. I think i still have a few knots and dents in the skull from that.

More than a few years back I had a guy threaten me with a shotgun if I didn’t quit fishing his dock. He was one of the snotty bunch up on Lake Keowee who think they own the water. I also had a cottonmouth for company in the boat one day. He had been curled up under the seat of my jon boat and didn’t come out to investigate until I was under way. I swear I walked on water getting out of there.
Salt, that’s one for the books.

It seems a lot of bad things happen in Jon Boats. ???
Saturday November 18th 1995, the Federal Govornment had been shutdown since the fourteenth. Had a trout tournament that Saturday and we planned to fish the tidal pond on Bulls Island. Too rough to beach the boat out front so we planned to tie up at the dock and walk the walk. Got to the dock early, 6am or so. There was yellow police tape all over the dock. We decided to just find another place to fish…NOT. Tied the boat up, ignored the yellow tape and went fishing. Had a good day (fishing) if I recall. We had just started to make the 3 mile walk back to the dock when a Federal Agent pulled up in a truck. He was not a happy man. Come to find out he was home with his family when he got the call. Had to get the boat ready. Drive to Moores landing and run to bulls island. He detained us for an hour. My buddy was an attorney and he did all the talking. I was just “yes sir” “no sir”. The last thing he told us was “see you in Federal Court”. We never did get a ticket or a summons. Don’t know why. Maybe he calmed down after awhile. He could have given us a lift back to the dock but didn’t. 3 miles later there he was making sure we got the heck off of bulls island.

Have to say storms… kayak, jonboat… but the most scarry was a night camping on Capers island with purple lightning going every direction. kinda thought that was it… we said our prayers, tell ya what.
After moving here from oft, I purchased a rubber raft to fish some pilings in the surf off of Folly. I caught several trout and a nice spanish and put them on a stringer just like we do up north! Well we didn’t have sharks in Lake Champlain so I was introduced to the Carlina Raft Ride. I thought that raft was going to destruct right under me. Got to shore and couldn’t stand up my legs were shaking so bad! I’ve also been shot at twice by the locals while fishing. I honestly don’t know which I fear worse the sharks or the bubba’s!![]()
Trolling with my Dad on a rockpiled bank in the ICW. We were around 20-25 feet off when a drunk, or just plain stupid guy zooms between us and the rocks at around 30mph. Never seen my Dad so mad! I’ll never forget the dumb look on that guys face as he went by. He couldn’t have been in 2 foot of water as the tide was low. I hollered and ask if he was from Ohio but he didn’t answer.

On Mothers Day a few years back I got up early and went shark fishing by myself. Right as I was starting to get a little sea sick I caught a sharpnose and thought I’d tag it. While holding it down with my left hand I tried to tag it with my right. It bounced off the shark and into my left hand…yeah, the metal tag buried in my hand, with blood everywhere. I took an extra tag with me to Emergicare so the Doc would know what he was digging out. Those things are designed to stay in, trust me. The Doc said they’d had a guy in a few weeks earlier with a lure embedded in his nose. That made me feel so much better. So, anyway, the worst threat is myself.
Worst threat fishing, hmmmm, have to go with, NMFS and SAFMC!

Man T2B, you coverd that one for sure!!
BTW, I have a Capt buddy in Murrells Inlet that does some winter boat maintenance via diving in dry suits etc…If you are interested in talking some business w/ him, send me a PM(I saw your photos out NW and your prior business)
Thanks SaltHunter, pretty much have hung up the dry suit for good!! These bones don’t take too kindly to those kind of water temps nowdays:( In the NW we used to even waterski in our dry suits, in the summertime! Stickin to above water marine work now!

I know what you mean there, older colder bones…
I seem to handle the cold OK, but afterwards I get all Creaky and Kranky!
I was on a scuba forum just last night when I ran a cross a guy telling a story about losing his favorite speargun…![]()
Dive was over and he was at the surface, not yet back to his boat anchored nearby, when he hears the whine of a boat coming towards him. Seeing the boat headed straight for him and the captain failing to see his frantic waving, the diver submerged to a safe depth and the boat passed over him…it was then the diver felt the fishing line cutting through his wetsuit. Instinctively he raised his gun up just in time to see a 10-11 inch diamond jig come at him and lodge one of the treble hooks deep in to the wood stock of the gun and ripping it out of his hands…
He later said he was on fire mad and made a great effort to get back to the boat and go catch up with the s.o.b. and set things straight, but by the time he got out of his gear and battled the stuck anchor- the fishing boat was long gone…
I suppose it could be true…I envision Rodney Dangerfield behind the wheel of that fishing boat…“Hey Smells!!! You scratched my anchor!!!” ![]()

I don’t have any trouble believing it. My dive instructor was on a dive and had his dive flag on a float. He had put his arm in the spool of line to drag it along. He felt some tugging on the line and a strong pull that dragged him a few feet and stop. He surfaced to see what was going on. A boat had come by, had no idea what a dive flag was or what the rules were and decided to TAKE IT. That was the first few tugs, then they put it in the boat and took off dragging him. It only stopped when the float flew out of the boat. When he surfaced the boat was circling around to get the dive flag again! I think they were lucky he didn’t have a speargun.
