wheezing Yammie

Took the boat out for a few hours Sat to charge the batteries letting the motor idle while soaking a gulp. Every two or three minutes the motor would wheeze and cough. It actually died a couple of times. Any suggestions as to diagnosis? It is a 96 200 carb motor. It visited the Chris clinic this summer so i don’t think it is a tune up issue. Gas? I did not check the bowl but would expect if water was an issue it would stop and not start easily. Diagnosis?

Thanks
Louie

Mine was doing the same thing this summer and ended up being the carbs. Had them cleaned, adjusted, and now it idles like a champ. Good Luck

The best way to a fisherman’s heart is through his fly.

They sneeze when they are adjusted to lean.

The lean pop, just back your idle mixture screw out an eighth at a time pop the throttle let it idle; if still doing it back out another eighth and so on. might want the carb job just to make sure you don’t lose your powerhead.

sneezing is definately from runing lean
carbs dont usually need adjusting out of the blue, something is causing the lean condition.
a lean carb on a 2 stroke run very long, will usually result in an engine rebuild
get it looked at

Run a separate tank with fresh gas and isolate the problem. If it runs fine then you know you either have a gas problem or a fuel line issue. If it doesn’t then you can most likely isolate it to the engine and eliminate the fuel line issue(most likely). Yammy 2 strokes like to gum up carbs. That would be my first guess but run a separate tank and that should give you a good starting point.

Also, if you have a fuel water separator, empty that out and see how much water you have in there.
