Crews freezers were empty of white flaky meat. First part of plan was to do a hit and run, get business done, on BSB and Triggers. Second part of plan was to sprint to the hill, clean fish and boat. Third part watch Gamecocks take the SEC. First part checked off. Second part checked off. Maybe next year on part three.
Part One:
Tried to stay away from trash fish like AJ and ARS, but didn’t happen.
Part two quick ride to the hill and clean up in time for game.
Part Three:
Auburn quarterback unstoppable in SEC title game
Auburn just too much for South Carolina
Auburn knocked off South Carolina, 56-17, in the SEC championship game Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
EB, I catch a lot of hell for my electrics but when you are going for just pure fun and meat you can’t beat them! most guests ask for an electramate after a few ajs or bankbass pulled from 100+ft. great day out there, I love winter fishing. Was that you the CG was checking on the way in? pertty strange a cutter pulling a cc in the jettys. glad you had a good day.
How do you like the Daiwa electric reels as compared to the electra-mates? I have alot of the electra -mates and one from NG Fishn, but was thinking about going to the Diawas because they seem so compact.
Thanks,
Bill

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
Glad it wasn’t me they pulled. Would have interfered with watching the Carolina game. If your fishing over 150’ those electrics are a must. I make a lot of moves to stay on the fish. Sometimes I’ll miss the drift and immediately say pull em up. If the anglers are using 20+ounces, there ready to mutiny because they get whipped in a hurry.
If you’re not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you’re not a conservative at forty you have no brain.

Electra-mates used to be a good choice in a recreational reel. I have a couple and also have an NG. Use the newer Diawas, and you’ll want to trash the old ones. Much lighter and auto stop are the two big pluses. Time will tell on how they tolerate salt water. I’ve had the smaller reel(second in)for two seasons and its still ok.

Who is that Sexxy Man holding up that Red Snapper?.. ha, Mr. Mike hope yall get to bring EB down to keys this year, the sailfish bite is really heating up with the snappers and groupers being good on the reef, all within 5 miles of the marina, here’s a pair of muttons I caught on Saturday ( our version of ARS in keys )
Ross, will be coming through late Dec early Jan on our way to Islamujeres . A stop in Islamirada for mangroves and tuna sounds good. I think we’ll get our fill of sails in Mexico. Can’t wait to wear shorts instead of hellies.
Sublime, the perch was left over bait that found its way into the keeper bucket.
why electrics when fishing so shallow? The one time I fished the TS I fished my rods and reels. Not sure how deep we were but I only had 8 oz banks in box. I had to hook a couple together b/c the electrics were using 16-20’s. I was definitely much more wore out then I had ever been offshore before. I went through many of bottles of water and cans of beer that day for the maybe 2-3 hours we actually got to fish. Not sure how deep we were but best guess would say 150’ or so.

So you’re saying this trip was just for meat and not as much for fun? IMO, the electrics take the fun out of it. I understand if you’re 200’ deep pulling up a couple snowies at a time.

The short answer is like 23sailfish stated “Efficiency” The long winded answer is as follows.
The trip we were on was a meat fishing trip. Any idiot could catch BSB on any type of gear this time of year. It takes little skill. The quicker we got the legal limit, the better the odds were we could watch the Carolina game. If we planed to stay and fish for grouper with jigs or livies, I would have switched to my Penn Torque 300 and Shimano jigging stick.(shown in one of the pictures)
Even though we fished only out to 95 feet, the fatigue factor is still much less with the electrics. If you kept track of the amount of times you had to drop to get 15 BSB,3 Silvers,a few triggers, and all the trash fish, throw backs, and bait stealers , you would come up with a number of about 50. It took us 90 minutes to get our fish. Actual fishing time was probably 1 hour, figuring in moves.

I use my electric in 100’ all the time. How is it any more “fun” to crank up a black sea bass from 100’ on a broomstick w\4/0 penn senator by manually cranking? It’s not like you are fighting a largemouth on 12lb test. They don’t put up any less of a struggle on an electric.
Now, if you are catching gags and red snappers on 20lb spinning outfits, that is a different story, but in my opinion (I have actually used both electric and non-electric reels) there isn’t any co-efficient of “fun” lost by using an electric reel. If anything, it makes the bottom fishing trips way more enjoyable… There is nothing any less fun than reeling up an empty hook, but pressing the button makes it easier on your hands.
Also, if you are worried about “sport”, it’s probably much easier to keep a bottom dweller glued on to a medium action spinning outfit with high speed retrieve than a broomstick with an electric anyway, since the give of the rod helps you play the fish properly and keeps from pulling the hook.
