When do bonnet heads start showing up in the creeks?
usually mid April but last year, the first one we got was Mar 14
thanks
i nabbed and released my 1st bonnethead of the year last year by noodling easter sunday in a big tide pool by the beach. tourists sure are funny when they see a “hammerhead” stuck in a foot of water
definately not caused by a BH but i also remembering finding a cownose ray with a large chunk bitten out of it that same day…hopefully they show up early april again!
Some of your best whitening holes will sometimes hold smooth dogfish until water temps start getting close to 58-60* this time of year. No bag limit and they eat good. Deep holes at the mouths of creeks on slack low with a piece of shrimp on the bottom. I haven’t been this year but last was hit and miss last year. When you find them they are usually in numbers. As with any shark you have to leave head intake to bring home, gut em raking your knife along the back bone and rib cage a few times, dip em in the water a couple of times and then throw on ice. They have one of the biggest livers you’ll see on a fish. 2-3 feet is about as big as I’ve seen them.
