In November the club held its first end of year party. In the spirit of the holidays, my daughter Megan thought we should do something to help others. She organized a charity drawing and auction to raise money for Dorchester Children’s Center, a Summerville organization that helps abused children throughout the Tri-County area.
We hoped to raise a few hundred dollars, but thanks to the kindness of others, we way exceeded our expectations. The net result was $1,310!
The center, like others, runs mainly from grants, funds and donations. But those funds don’t cover heart. They don’t cover things we take for granted. Things like Christmas.
The center provides Christmas presents for about 130 kids. Many who had donated in the past were unable to due to the tough economic times. Two young ladies we met this evening who worked at the center went out on Black Friday with $200, doing the best they could to provide for those kids.
I will NEVER forget the look on their face tonight when we told them we had $1,310 to donate for them. Every nickle we raised will go towards giving those kids Christmas. Santa had just filled their stocking, and they were going SHOPPING this weekend on behalf of those kids!
And it all began in October 2010 with Megan’s first fish. It was a trout. She named it Bob.
While always a straight A girl, she never was passionate about sports or activities. But she became passionate about fishing.
Then SSWA came along. When her Dad became a board member she attended every meeting with him. She now sits on the board as a Youth Advisor, a new postion that we intend to maintain to remind us of the importance of nurturing youth fishing as the future of our sport.
And it has resulted in the check presentation tonight. One fish spawning a passion for more fish that lead to a desire to use fishing to help others. All in 13 months.
