I’m sorry to ask this here in a public forum, but I plan on eating the fish I catch & need to know if these fish are safe.
What website can I go to find out if the fish in the Sampit river have safe levels of PCBs & dioxins? I’ve been googling for over an hour and haven’t come up with anything. I don’t download huge PDFs & my java is disabled because I’m on restricted bandwidth, but this info should be available somewhere, right?
I’ve read about the IP’s dioxin levels & that catfish might be unsafe. I’m anchored here in the sampit near IP w/ a catfish on my hook ready to reeled in, LOL, & I’m concerned! What gov website can assure me that this fish is safe?
Do you know anyone who regularly eats fish that are caught near IP’s mill in the Sampit and is healthy & not overweight?
I’d be more worried about 3V upriver than IP. If you can’t find warnings then, the fish should be safe for consumption.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Sampit River - Georgetown County
One meal per week - Largemouth Bass
One meal per month - Bowfin (Mudfish)
No Restrictions -Black Crappie, Bluegill Sunfish, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Mullet, White Perch
Most of these replies are what I expected. Thanks for dhec info. That’s somewhat what I was looking for, although, I’m not sure how long a man might last if his catch is limited to crappie, sunfish, mullet & perch. I have to wonder about all the other fish in river, & the other obvious questions, but, I’m not trying to cause trouble. I just have the obvious motivations for asking. I literally have a catfish on my pole & I’m not sure how long he’ll last. I was kinda hoping a bigger fish might bite him, indicating that there are large fish in this river, but, so far, he’s still there. I’m learning still. I’m curious to know how long he’ll provide live bait too. Who knows, I might give it a chance.
If you have to rely on the government to tell you if it’s safe or not to eat something, then you need to quit fishing and take up another hobby!

I’d rather eat at the OP’s house than yours, you don’t seem to care if your fish are safe or not.

If I had to live off of fish I’d starve any way.
I apologize for busting his chops a little, but good grief!! If you’re that worried just don’t eat any fish.
You’ll never get sick from eating too much Mercury in fish. You would have to eat 4 or 5 meals a day of high mercury content fish for a month to get sick from that.

Well, I’m right new a few other rivers. Which one of these rivers isn’t near a factory?
Don’t tell me Wacama.
Maybe the black river? I hear it’s very beautiful. Maybe the ocean is the best bet for safest food, but, then I have to battle the jetties & sudden weather changes in a sailboat, which I’m not sure about, but who knows.
That ICW was loaded w/ shark, that’s for sure & there’s a huge nature reserve right between Charleston & Georgetown. That place aught to be real pristine.
I just wanted to share w/ you guys, when I was anchored in the ICW at night (on the side), I caught a lot of little squid w/ the castnet & emptied the net onto the dock. Then when I swished the squid away w/ my rope, they all lit up with a bright cobalt blue. This was at night. It was one of the most beautiful colors I’ve ever seen. Really neat.
