Is it cheaper to get braided line spooled at a tackle shop, than to buy it? I’ve seen them doing it somewhere but don’t remember where it was? They charge by the yard or something? Does braided do well on level winds? I braided lone seems to always get mangled around my cork with a flounder type rig any pointers? Thanks
Braid does just fine on a convential style reel. Choosing the right pound test for your particular application is what is important. When I was doing alot of offshore fishing I ran 150 lb power pro on my planner rod and for my bait casters I will run 15 to 20 tops. I usually spool my own reels b/c it’s cheaper. Hope this helps.

Be careful to where you take them to get spooled, or at least check it before you leave. I got mine spooled with braid a few weeks back, finaly bought a rod to put the reel on, went to tie on my leader material, only to find out they spooled it backwards. Good luck me walking in the door and wanting them to fix it without a receipt.

buffalope,
Spooling your reels w/ braid can be about the same price if not cheaper by getting them spooled at the tackle shop. It really depends on how much braid you want to put on there and the size. For instance, a 150yd spool of Power Pro 20# will cost you roughly $15.00 where as you get it spooled by the yard it runs .09-.10 cents a yard. If you bought a spool of 150yds but your reel only ends up holding 120yds that is where you will lose out too! There are different braids out there that run more xpensive as well! Keep in mind the lighter the braid the better it will cast. Be sure to put it on fairly tight and be sure to either put some type of backing on the reel. Don’t just put braid on the spool because it will not grasp the spool and slide. Hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to call me!

Line needs to be spooled very tight with braid so that it does not “dig in” on itself while fighting a fish under pressure. This is a PAIN to deal with.
Give Jeremy a call at Atlantic Game and tackle in Mount Pleasant he has everything you need.
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

Last weekend Charleston Angler had 1/2 off all line. Maybe they will have that sale again and tell someone this time.!!

All the local stores have the equipment to spool. If not doing it at home I go to AGAT simply because the price and Jeremy lets me spool them myself.

I just had a couple new reels spooled at the Bass Pro in M. Beach. An older fellow named Herman did them and did it right. He puts your braid on one of their spools (same brand, size, etc…), then ties on mono and fills out the spool with it. Once the spool is full, he takes your spool and reverses the order, mono on first then the braid. That way the spool is full with the added mono backer. They do not charge for any of the mono and will put the line on free if you bought it there. You can bring in any reel, it does not have to be bought there. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. We don’t have the options here in Cola. that ya’ll do in Charleston.

Wind knots. Use alittle stronger braid or mono closer to your rig.
