Where does SCDNR fit in?

A Couple of posts describe being checked by DNR in federal waters. It appears they: (1) picked up the target boats on radar. (2) They ran a considerable distance to check their target boat. (3)They were only interested in the owner of the boat and the fish box. (4)The targeted boat was over hard bottom. (5) There were at least two officers in a relatively new Contender ($80,000?). (6) DNR is severely strapped for cash.
Where is the money coming from? Who is SCDNR working for?

Personally I’m more concerned about what obummer is doing to our country. But, were you in one of these boats? How do you know they were picked up on radar? How do you know they “ran a considerable distance”? How do you know they were only interested in the owner and the fish box? I’m not sure I get your point if there is one.

As far as a relatively new Contender, have you thought that the boat might have been taken because of drug running ?

I DONT HAVE A BOAT
BUT LOVE TO FISH> HINT

They must be getting a lot of boats from “drug running”. Last time I was in the Charleston DNR office they had eight (8) boats in the parking lot. Its more likely a case of not being fiscally responsible.

how does an enforcement group do their job without the necessary equipment?

I’d be nice if they were as concerned about enforcemnet, and regulations as they are about conservation. I agree they need equiptment, but excess…

The cost of one of those boats isn’t probably the same as the cost of a single officer’s yearly salary by the time you consider insurance, unemployment, training, and other costs associated with personnel. And yes I know how much a 30’+ twin engine boat costs. I’ve priced them just to see how much that boat is that I’ll never own, afford, or probably even charter.

That being said, I would like to know how citizens can hold such agencies accountable for fiscal indiscretion, but when you have a lunatic in the White House that’s racked up the largest debt in American history (and if I had to guess, perhaps even the history of humanity) and then have the gall to say that his policies don’t add a nickel to the debt, well I guess we are just that STUPID to elect these criminals.

SCDNR is not the problem.

Looks like I’m going to have to start hiding my BSB a little better.

Realfin is correct. They use radar to spot you and then run to you at a high speed depending on what boat it is. The 36’ fountain marine patrol boat has 3 brand new 300 yamahas and does around 70 and the contenders have brand new 250 yamahas- apparently there is a different funding for the motors than other areas of DNR that need money badly. Like most government agencies if there is funding and they need to use it or they will lose it, they use it. It seems like a huge waste of money, time and resources to run 60 mph to check a boat and hassle etc. I have never met a government officer that doesn’t want to play with the toys he was being paid to play with. Overall the SCDNR is not the problem but having to deal with them in that situation is very frustrating

The money probably comes from Homeland Security. You can add drones in also. They will be keeping tabs on us soon, if not already. It shocks me that this is a borderline Tea Party state, and we don’t fight the feds more on this. Everyone knows the law is broken. As I have said time and time again all our state would have to do is make sea bass legal in state waters and only check within 3 miles. Instead they have given in to the evil free federal money like everyone else. Nookie is such a hypocrite.

When I was checked the first time they said federal money was footing the fuel bill.

I didn’t make my point clearly enough, so I’ll try again. We The feds have shut our bottom fishing down for no justifiable cause. The way the federal government functions, that is not a surprise. I do have a major problem with our DNR going into federal waters specifically enforce federal regulations. I had hoped DNR was on our side in this issue. I have faith in our biologists. However, I believe management has sold us out to the federal government. They’ve, apparently, sold their soul for a dollar.

Correct. This was made clear to me when they said, “We are out here doing research FOR the FEDS.”

Pretty sure anyone that wants to question DNR is free to go down to Fort Johnson and ask to speak with someone about it. Instead everyone wants to hurl accusations and theories around on Charlestonfishing.com

And for you people not in the area I think you can call 843-953-9300 and ask your questions.

CaptFritz, in light of the very hard feelings generated by this controversial closing, if DNR is not an accomplice to the feds, or even if DNR disagrees with federal policy which treats us so shabbily, they should speak up. Also, I suspect that you have contacts in DNR that few of us have. Can you shed any light on their position?

DNR acts as feds off shore. Federal funding. Frankly, I like that they do. Since almost every fishery (bottom species) is closed right now, I am glad they are checking offshore (with radar) to catch any lawbreakers.

Call down to the DNR and ask to speak with the officer in charge if you want to know their position on things. I don't have any contacts on the "inside" that I'm aware of. I do know several of the Game wardens just from being on the water so much the past 15 years.

Fritz, these are called “discussion forums” for a reason.

That being said, the local DNR is in a catch 22. The feds are going to spend money to enforce these laws one way or another. Either the state can accept their handout and take over on the enforcement or if they refuse, the feds will just push them aside and put federal wardens out there. So, since you know the laws will be enforced one way or another, which would you pick? I would rather deal with locals.

Sorry for telling someone where they could get some real facts for their discussion instead of having a discussion based on assumptions and theories. I forgot facts and logic are not to be used on this site.
