Where to buy live bait

Living in Columbia, I don’t always have a chance or time to come down and “make bait” before an inshore trip. Where’s the best place to get live bait? Who has the best selection? Who has the best price (or is it the same everywhere)?

Where are you going to put in at and what kind of bait do you want?

Probably Remley’s. Mainly going after reds, trout, and flounder so looking for blue points, fiddlers, shrimp, mud minnows…things of that nature.

Haddrel’s on Coleman blvd. Open at 7am I believe. They have everything you could want, but the parking lot is a pain to get in and out of with a boat.

Park across the street at the old pig on Saturday. Sunday is not a problem. Do not forget the frozen mullet for the bottom. Fresh is better but you asked.

I appreciate the info, fellas. Do prices fluctuate throughout the season or do they stay pretty constant? Sorry to bombard everyone with these questions. Making the run from Columbia everytime I hit the salt, I want to make sure I’m getting the most bang for my buck.

I only know of two places in Mt Pleasant, Henry’s (not sure if they offer live bait) and Haddrell’s, is there some hidden gem I’m missing (of course if it’s a hidden gem, you’re probably not going to tell me about that one. Lol!)?

Again, thanks for the help.

While you’re at Haddrell’s, get yourself a cast net. Plenty of bait in the creeks. I had 3 good trips in May in the Wando catching plenty of reds on cut mullet that we caught in the net.

Roger That. I’ve been reading reports about lack of bait in the creeks so wasn’t sure if this was a viable option.

Now, who’s willing to teach me how to throw a cast net? LOL!!!

Google and Youtube are your friends. Tons of techniques if you can’t find someone local to teach you.

If you need a shop with longer hours try Duncans on Redbank rd.
Live Mudminnows and fiddlers
Frozen shrimp, squid, menhaden, mullet.
They also have most of the basic tackle one would need.

I always call first to see what live bait they have.

Thanks for the information!!!

Is everybody pretty much in the same ball park with price or are there some gougers i need to avoid?

I havent seen any gougers.
Duncans typically is a dollar or two more for a dozen mudminnows. The rest of the bait prices seem close.

I havent seen anywhere that gouges, but there is only a few places to get live bait. All the small shops are closed.
I guess most folks just fish with what they can catch in a trap or castnet.

Put out some minnow traps while your throwing the castnet. in 30min you should have everything you need.

Good to know.

Thanks again!!
