I would like to take my boys to dig some clams but I haven’t ever looked for them in the Charleston area. I live on James Island and haven’t tried to find them in over 30 years. Any pointers? I remember looking for the keyhole and digging with a rake… it seemed pretty easy where I was then… that’s about all I remember.
I love those little clams and this is the best time of year to find them
Unfortunately they are illegal to harvest from mid May until the first of October, and then are supposed to be taken only from “approved” harvesting areas. See maps http://www.dnr.sc.gov/marine/shellfish/regs.html
quote:Clams Typically closed May 16 ? Sept. 30; may be shortened or extended by the SCDNR. Call 843-953-9300 for season dates. Possession Limit: 1/2 U.S. bushel per person per day from public or state shellfish grounds; No boat, vehicle, or boat/ vehicle combination may contain more then 3 personal limits regardless of the number of people on the boat or in the vehicle. Size Limit: 1-inch minimum thickness A person may relationally harvest shellfish (oysters and/or clams) no more than 2 days per 7 day period
That being said, look in the areas where the sand line of a beach meets the grass/mud line of the marsh.
