Where would you take a kid just to bend a rod?

Got some friends coming from out of town and the dad tells me his daughter (5 yr old) would really love to go fishing.

I don’t think a guide is in their budget (unless someone on CF wants to take us out and we’ll buy gas, bait, etc… but they just want to get her on some fish. Species doesn’t matter, just a bend in the rod and not knowing what’s on the other end is the thrill they want.
Any suggestions on good spots to try in MP? I assume cut shrimp would be the bait of choice?
Thanks!

I would go for brim that are in every pond in every neighborhood in Mt Pleasant. I got worms out of my yard and took my 2.5 year old daughter fishing. She loved it, there was no waiting, immediate hits until I ran out of bait. Getting kids on a boat and wanting them to be patient until a fish bites is pretty tough.
Just my 2 cents as maybe a backup plan

People seem to do well at the Mt P pier at the base of the Ravenel bridge. I would recommend buying some mud minnows at the charleston angler in town center and have her fish off the pier. IMHO frozen shrimp doesn’t start doing well until the shrimp really start arriving in June or so. Good luck

Pond at Botany Bay. Awesome day trip/car ride adventure too.

Folly Pier with dead shrimp/finger mullet. You’ll be catchin all day.

or the MT P pier with fiddlers or mullet.

Folly Pier is good for kids, except that the railing is very high, they have to stand on a bench for it to be fun to them (well, at least it’s that way for my 4 year old boy).

To be honest with you, if you are wanting to avoid getting sandy, take the girl to the Pitt Street pier in Mt. Pleasant and just fish with cut squid (doesn’t get stolen as easily). Lots of small silver surf perch and pinfish around, the occasional puffer or toadfish. You can drop a $3 crab trap down and pull up a few crabs for gleeful squeals from young kids, they love it.

Other easy-cheesy places-- fishing at the Battery in Downtown. Park, walk 15 steps and cast, keep the cooler and tackle box in the trunk. Same mix of fish you might catch at Pitt street, with a slight more chance of stingrays. Riverfront Park in N.Chas is pretty decent too.

Breech Inlet is another decent spot if you don’t mind the sand.

Mt pleasant pier on Shem creek…have a coworker who fishes there with his little oy and does well

Go to Walmart and buy one of those four dollar drop nets for crabs…added fun. Make sure crabs are 5" point to point. Hope you catch em up!

No crab trap needed…

Palmetto Islands County Park is a nice place to fish with kids. Not always the best place to catch fish, but it’s all timing out there. There’s a small feeder creek off the Wampacheone (Boone Hall, whatever you call it), with a fishing dock. Check the park map, but it’s the northern most fishing dock at the park. Fairly isolated. Not many pedestrians during the weekdays. Not bunches of fish, but if you get there about 2-3 hours before low tide with mud minnows, you can catch some small trout or whiting. The larger dock actually on the Wampacheeone is a waste of time. Never caught a thing there. There’s a kayak dock farther down, which is actually the best place to fish, but it would be a little tricky for a 5-year-old to walk around on, so I’d avoid it. Plus, if the fishing doesn’t work out, there’s lots of playground gear and open space to enjoy. My two cents.

Same as Teddy says for James Island County Park. Nice fishing pier there on a creek off the Stono. Crabs and fish.
