What’s the best way to prepare/treat this for use? Saving it for a buddy for next season and I don’t want to ruin it…it’s salted down right now.
split the tail to get the bone out and let it lay flat. try to get all the fat and meat off. comb the hairs straight (dog combs work fine). you can nail it to a board to straighten it out. salt it until all moiisture is removed. oh yeah, freezing it will kill any parasites. you can cure the belly hair for spinning the same way- just stretch it good and i would soak it in sw 1st. hope this helps
I’ve found that the southern deer hair (you can tell 'cause of the accent:smiley:) is short. Great for wintertime clousers (small) but not great for bigger bugs. Also, you can use borax as a preservative.

You need to scrub it with borax… hang it up and let it dry… call and ask a taxidermist…!
I agree with fominroman, local deer hair is short and awesome for spinning and stacking but not good for big clousers and such. Also when you freeze them, I like to staple them at the base fo the tail to some thick cardboard and wap them up… helps keep the ahir form getting bent at goofy angles, it’s short enough no sense in making it even shorter because of a bad bend in the hair.
