whiting in stono river?

Tried to mix it up the other day after redfishing all day saturday. Went after some whiting in the stono down near where the kiawah river comes in. Also, tried where Bass Creek comes into the stono.

Bits of shrimp (peeled) on the bottom with a double drop rig and small hooks. Got 2 fish, each about 6 inches. Not exactly filling the cooler with fatties as I was hoping.

What time of year do they get of decent size? I also anchored up in the middle of the stono near sol legare and was getting some nibbles.

Does anyone have general areas that they recommend in that area? It’s near my house and I’d love to have an area where I can reliably get a few for the frying pan…

Go up the Kiawah til you get even with the 1st dock on the left, anchor 75 yards or so towards the middle from the dock. Bait the hooks like you did yesterday, and put ice in the cooler. I prefer incoming tide. Also, go to the right from Sol Legree bout the 4th dock on the right. Anchor near it, and cast towards the middle. Have fun, this is my wife’s favorite kind of fishing. Non-stop action. Have caught bonnetheads, and all kinds of other fish with that recipe. Have fun.

Caught a dozen nice Whiting at the Jetties the other day.
Cut Mullet, ebbing tide.

Thanks for the intel, fellas! May keep a few bits of shrimp around if i am in that area. Have a hankering for some fried fish.

Glad to hear that the stono does produce some whiting. I just wasn’t sure how close to the main inlet I needed to be to get some.

thanks to those who post real info!

You could always drift with the tide in the stono and anchor when you get one. I have done this before in areas where i’m not exactly sure where to anchor.

went down near sol legare today and it was just plain sloppy. Winds were 25-30 steady making anchoring very hard. We managed one whiting pretty quickly, then got frustrated with the wind and building seas so headed inshore to get out of the wind.
