Who has riden on an old Mako 25 ?

Pre 1983 hull… the original “Mako 25” with a single 225 or 250 or either twin 130 or 140’s, etc. The model I’m talking about had a raised fishbox/livewell in front of the motor(s) which made it a somewhat closed transom with a splashwell - not the notched transom with fold down splash gate most old Mako’s had. Also had U-shaped raised forward seating. Brown deck gelcoat. If it came with white deck gelcoat it was one of the 254’s they made from '83 til about '89, and that’s a different hull.

Fishability should be much better than my Mako 21B, but will the ride be significantly better?

Will it be worth my time to bring one back to life? Would like to power with a single 250HP OX66 or HPDI.

Who’s riden on one or fished one, and what were your thoughts?

Any ■■■■■■■■ would be greatly appreciated.

Here’s a couple of pics of one I saw on CL today (no affiliation). Seems to be the model you want to know about. Good looking boats, I don’t think it would be a waste of time to bring one back.

not sure about the older ones your talking about, but the ones with the fold down splashwell are pigs. I’ve run several of them, they need every bit of 225+ to make them go. Especially if they have bottom paint on them. Definitely a boat designed when gas was much cheaper.

wes
we rented one for a week in the keys a few years back
had a newer single 225 merc on it
top speed was under 40
rode nose high and couldnt get the bow down
boat did not have tabs, definately needed them
based on what i experienced, i definately wouldnt own one
