Who needs a fishing license?

If fishing from a boat, does every person on the boat need a SC fishing license?
Thanks

unless they’re under 16, yes.

Only if they are fishing. Be careful, if you have three poles in the water and three people on board and only two have a license, you are in trouble.

My wife rides when I fish and yes I have several poles working.

Checked on often with never a ticket…

What does it cost $10? These guys are here to help us not hurt us. My wife does not fish or hunt and has her Saltwater Sportsman Licence. Same as mine. All of SC waters and Game.

you do not need one if you are fishing on a legal charter boat.

every one will need a s.c. license if there is enough rods or devices to go around, that is if they are over 16 years old. 2 rods, 3 people, one wound not be required to have a license if they dont touch the rod. $10 will solve the problem if they are living in s.c.

Thanks. The $10 isn’t a big deal, just didn’t know if the license was for the boat or the individual. I’ll get the wife her own 3 year license today.
By the way, I was boarded on the upper Wando last week. They checked the license, checked for life jacket, didn’t check boat reg or anything else (unfortunately, no fish to check). Other people in the area said the rarely, if ever see the DNR up that way N of the 41 bridge.

If they want to ticket someone for riding along without a fishing license, they need to re-word the regulation.

You can be ticketed & inconvenienced for any number of reasons…having it stand up in court is another animal.

Be sure you have the Registration or a copy of it with you. Also, throwable device, license, etc. If they want to they can cite you for any violation, fishing or safety related. Most will give a warning, but don’t count on it. Some will even offer great fishing suggestions.

The way I read it each license holder can have up to 4 rods on the boat or in the water.

I’d rather fish than eat.

That is for freshwater. Under the saltwater regs no such statement exists (not that I can find).

It was posted under fishing discussion. Living 250 miles inland I thought the topic included freshwater.
The entire subject in the regulations is very vague leaving open for the officer’s discretion.

Got a sweet ticket last summer for $168 bucks at the landing ouch! Check size of boat for jackets. Our 12 year old is a hoss, he is 5’9" tall, size 13 shoe and 162 lbs. No law on that one, they rated him as an adult. Everyone that is aboard will have a license.

Do yourself a favor. If going out with non-fishermen don’t take any tackle. Otherwise, make sure everyone onboard has a license. If you don’t, you are asking for trouble…or at the very least, a hassle. $10 is cheap for all the effort the state goes through to make our fisheries some of the best.

BTW - If launching in the Bushy Park area or above, make sure you have both Salt & Freshwater licenses or it will limit your catch as largemouth bass, striped bass, spottail bass, bream, flounder & speckled trout are around the area. It is cheap and is helpful to conservation efforts. Cheap thrills in my opinion. Support the SCDNR if you are a true SC Sportsman.

As long as you are within cell range you can always purchase a fishing license from the boat that is valid immediately as soon as the transaction is completed. I have done it a few times when I have had passengers on the boat without a license that decided they want to fish. If I remember correctly, you just need their SCDL # and of course, a credit card. The confirmation number is all you need until they get a hard copy in the mail.

I’d say a hoss might be underestimating him! That’s a big young-un for 12!
