paper clips just weren’t the trick…not sure who won it but they were just under 10lbs I believe…we caught enough fish for a few meals…plus 4,276 endangered BSB…

Bruce Humbert won with a 9.3 or 9.5 lb fish. We were at the reef and only caught 1, 283 sea bass and about 40 sheepshead. Biggest fish was 7.76 lbs good enough for 4th. We aslo had 3rd place calcutta. My son was 2nd place youth. Our next biggest fish was 5.7 and it was 11th place, first place loser. I had 6 anglers and we used 15 pints of fiddlers. It was definitely too much work!

Mr. Olsen,
We also fished this tournament within sight of you all day and like everyone else, caught a bazillion black sea bass and very few sheeps.
I respect your opinion and also respect the fact that this may not be information you are willing to share, but is there some secret to at least somewhat getting away from the sea bass to catch more sheeps at the reefs such as a particular type of relief, or are you just trying to fish through them like we were. We kept moving in hopes that we could find somewhere where they weren’t so thick, and finally near the end of the day we started to up our sheep to bass ratio, but the sounder didn’t reveal anything much different than the sea bass havens we had been fishing earlier.

bellyup, The simple answer is once the water temp gets up to the upper 60’s or 70 both the blackfish and sheepshead will start moving back into shallower water. The blackfish will get thick at the shallower reefs (especially the smaller ones)and alot of teh sheeps will move on into the jetties and rivers. It has been my experience that the nearshore reef fishing for sheeshead is better when it is still cold enough to keep alot of the blackfish out in deeper water as well as alot of the sheeps at the shallow reefs. Some people take an under water camera with them and check the spot they are on to see if the sheeps are there. Just becasue they are there doesn’t mean they are biting though. Sometimes you have to wait them out or move to another spot. Just like other fisheries that became popular, it used to be VERY easy to go catch big sheeps at the reefs during the winter and early spring, but overfishing has once again greatly reduced the number of sheeps out there IMO.
There are several tricks to getting past the sea bass on different types of structure. If you didn’t notice, I had 6 anlgers going through the seabass in big numbers. Normally it works everytime, that once you go through about 30 bsb you would get a couple of sheep bites. On Saturday though, we concentrated on only 2 spots and hammered the bsb on them to get to the sheeps. We had some very big ones on and most likely the winner a few feet from the net but the bigger fish only were biting from 8-10 am. We didn’t catch anything over 3 lbs. after that. That is fishing. There are tons of sheeps on the reef. In my opinion, once the water warms more, a lot of the bigger seabass will head offshore and make it possible to catch the sheeps in better numbers. The sheeps are methodical feeders and cruise around the structure and even 30-40 ft away from the structure on the sandy bottom. I also moved the boat on the two places we fished about 10 times trying to knock out the most seabass as possible. It was too much work. I actually only fished about an hour during the day to help my clients.
There is always next year
Also, the jetties are loaded with sheeps right now, I am surprised there weren’t a few 10 lbers caught there since the weather was nice.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. I guess that makes me feel a little better about what we were doing though I see now that we should have just stuck it out in one spot instead of moving all over (my back certainly would have appreciated that). I’m actually missing skin on the two fingers where my reel sits from reeling up so many sea bass.
I hear you on the jetties. I caught a fish there that would have put me in the middle of the pack the weekend before, but we had to stick to the plan with the boat we had. I’d hate to have tried to anchor that thing up against the rocks. Congratulations to you and your anglers and to everyone else that placed in the tournament.
