From the numbers I've gotten the pricing is similar, but because solar obviously is designed to reduce your on grid power consumption it will pay for itself over a period of time, and give you the benefit of a whole home gen system when you need. Why spend that kind of money for something you might use 5-10x in 10 years when you could have it free and clear and it being pay you in less than 10 years?
That’s what I’ve been finding in my research also. I can go whole house solar for about $10K, get a 30% tax credit, reduce my power bill to almost nothing and sell any excess power back to the power company. I’m thinking strongly about going that route instead of the generator. The generator requires a lot more maintenance and a continuous fuel supply. The fuel cost isn’t much for a day or 2, but for 2 weeks it would get very expensive. And long term storage is an issue too. Solar has no running costs or fuel need.
Our power was out again half the day yesterday, little Generac did it’s job again.
