My dad finally decided to come fishing on his boat Monday. It was just my dad and me, so I was excited about spending some time with him offshore. We didn’t leave the dock until 645, b/c of July 4th festivities. Left the dock and asked dad if he had renewed his license as I had at 530 in the morning, and of course he hadn’t. Luckily I just got a new phone and bought his license on the way out.
We headed a about 3 miles south of 226 looking for a temp break I saw on terrafin, and started fishing in around 250ft of water at 930. Ten minutes in we caught an average sized sailfish. The first billfish I have ever reeled in! I have hooked and passed off at least 7 or 8 over the past few years, but never reeled one in.
Kept trolling out to about 290ft and found several pieces of lumber floating on the water. We trolled around that area for the next two hours and boated 7 dolphin (1-30lbs+;1-20lbs+;2-slings;2-nuts). Trolled back to 190ft and had something nail the wire rod! Thought we had a hoo! Ten seconds later a sailfish emerged in the spread hooked up! Dad reeled it in all the way to the planer, and while I was looking for the dang gloves to leader the fish in he came unbuttoned!!!
Came in to do some bottom fishing. Caught 4 ajs, 20 seabass, 3 ARS (1-24"), trigger, vermillion. It was asshame to let go such a nice ARS. Oh well I guess we might get to keep one someday.
Smooth ride in…Dad and I had a blast, definitely a trip I will remember.
