Who's the best for rebuilding a Merc?

I have a 2000 Merc 200 hp EFI with low compression in one cylinder. I live in Beaufort, but would bring it to Charleston for a rebuild if someone over there were truly the best. Who can you recommend?

If you want to repair the engine there are several good mechanics around that can handle that for you, including a couple in your area, but if you want to rebuild it, I’d recommend going with a mercury Factory reman power head, it will usually be cheaper in the long run than properlly rebuilding a power head

I was under the impression that a rebuild would be necessary if your cylinder’s compression was drastically lower than the others.

Anybody want to share a name?

the point I was making is most people repair an outboard by fixing only the offending cylinder, a lot of people do it and have good luck with it. I don’t have that kind of luck, if I tear an outboard down, ts going to get everything inside, its going to be rebuilt, not just repaired. I’ve had customers tell me they had their engine rebuilt just a couple of years ago and now its blown up again, I ask them to tell me which parts were replaced or if I can see the invoice for the work, most of the time, I find that the engine was repair, meaning fixing only the weak cylinder, rather than rebuilding it by replacing all the pistons, rings, bearings, etc…Once you tear into one, if you are going to rebuild it completely, especially if you find the crank is bad, you will generally be able to purchase a factory re manufactured power head for less money than rebuilding it. If you want a recommendation for some one to rebuild that Merc, I’d send you to Thomas Tyler in Florence, he’s semi retired and does excellent work(he built the power head on my 60 Merc for my McKee, he’s not cheap, but he’s fair. If you want to scrimp on parts or try to just get by, he won’t touch it. Either he does it right, or he won’t touch it.

Guys. Be careful with a rebuild. I’d look real hard at a new motor or at least a new power head. Good luck which everway you decide to go.

Give Dan a call at 843.884.8706. Does great work on the Merc’s. Tell him Matt sent you
