My friend and I are new to fishing and on Friday we went out to the folly
Pier and stayed for nine hours and did not catch a thing. We used shrimp and squid and the only thing we were able to catch was sunburn on top of our heads. So was it us or just bad timing? Also we used standard salt water rigs and 2/0 hooks. Any advice would be great.
My guess bad timing. Unless other people were catching fish, then you suck:smiley: It might still be a little early for the pier.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
Did you see others catching fish? Don’t be afraid to ask and find out what the locals do…baits, rigs, etc - next time you’ll be better prepared. Check out the surf/pier fishing section of the forums too.

Also note that there is a Surf/Pier Fishing Forum where you can get some good advice. I’ve heard that the surf at the north end of Folly is good, and if you can pick up a little knowledge, you might do well to try that, too.

I always have good luck with fresh shrimp from Crosbys. Always seem to catch something with them. Use a piece the size of your finger nail.
fish nude so u can show off ur pole…
About 2 years ago I was there for 4-5 hrs and no one was catching anything. Shrimp, squid, mullet… nothing worked. Out of desperation, I threw a white curly tail grub out on a jig head and within 10 seconds my reel was screaming. I fought a 5’ ray forever. By the time everything was done, the pier was closed.
Lesson: Variety. I would also try live shrimp and minnows from haddrells. I always have better luck with live over frozen. Get one of those aerators that run on 2 D batteries. It will run all day long and you can get fresh water at the end of the pier from the bait tank.
