I’m not an “experianced” saltwater fisherman, BY FAR. My limited fishing experiance has been spent in Georgetown and Murrell’s Inlet.
When at either of the above destinations, I “do good”. Meaning that I have a good time by catching all sorts of stuff and seeing “neat stuff” in the environment.
Be it watching dolphins, schools of baitfish, throwing the cast net and catching all sorts of crap…to catching big rays, sharks, a few trout, crabs, etc…
Having said all that, I’ve fished the little inlet in Cherry Grove many times over the years because I have a friend there with a house. I’ve NEVER had any luck. This past weekend, we put in at Little River and went out to the jetties. We fished all over the place and had mud minnows and squid. Two days, a combined 13 hours, and I caught NOTHING!
Somethin’ I did notice: no bait schooling, no real birds chasing bait, no dolphins, etc…
Is it just me, or is there any REASONABLE explanation? I know people catch fish there… I just don’t get it.

It don’t if you know where to fish.

I have spent some deal of time over the years in Cherry Grove (Hog Inlet?) and like you, have never caught much of anything there other than crabs (blue). I have seen others catch stuff (mainly flounder) and for some reason it always seems like older folks fishing by themselves in little creek boats. As for LR, I know there are some good spots as I have seen and heard of folks catching stuff, just never fished much up that way. Shoot, if I gauged the quality of fishing by what I catch, I would ask why fishing sucked so bad on planet earth.
Not too fond of that area myself…Too many watercraft all over the place, and minimal number of places to target fish IMO. Flatties are probably your best/most avail type inshore fish.
Some reds if you work hard on 'em. Mixed stuff around the jetties otherwise is about all I’ve seen/caught over the years.
Thongs are the next best thing to look for:sunglasses:
It’s HOT right now. Been fishing it all last week, weekend for charters. We been chatching around 30 Flounder a day with 8 to 15 been keeper. The reds are all so bite good too. We have been using 8 dozens mud minnow a day.
