Guess you commented on the dude in SCOF for using a grass fly on the “grass” hatch.
For the record I have had no more than 30 refusals on Murray with “traditional” flies…
Ease up a little…trying to help the guy notch one off the list.
I think you can probably see the difference between finding fish feeding in a normal pattern and chumming them in with handfulls of dog food. If you just want to reel up a big fish on a fly rod why not skip the bait and switch and just use kibbles and bits on a #16.
However you catch it, please post pictures! I would love to see some. Alos about posting pics of your pond, please put up good pics so I can see what areas you would look for them and stuff. Also are they “easy” to spot when tailing?
Flatscaster, you seem like kind of a jerk… I don’t really recall you helping anybody on this site, just you posting something then defending yourself about it. But to each his own!
Don’t fish for the carp in the pond anymore…we had a automatic feeder for the kids and such and the Amurs just ease in and start skimming after a while. Besides, they have a life expectancy of around 10 years. Be prepared for a long fight.
The Amurs on Murray are just plain tough…remind me of those Milkfish around the Sychelles
Yakman- Flats caster put up one of the best posts ever seen in this forum (see, “fishing with dad”) and on top of that he’s a stand up dude with a valid point…
To each his own, but this is the internet and if your gonna post you have to be ready to hear other peoples opinions… At no point did he attack the person as a bad fisherman, or anything else, he simply questioned the method…
No need to get all butt-hurt… its just fishing boys…
P.S- For the record I agree with flatcaster on this one… If it can be done with a more natural approach, targeting the fish in a natural feeding pattern (which it can) then I would go that route… is it harder?? yes. Does it take longer?? Probably… But i didn’t start fly fishing because it was easy and I don’t go out on the water with a fly-rod to just catch something… thats what spinning rods are for… But like I said to each his own… don’t get all mad at me now… it’s just my humble opinion…
Now, wait a minute there Mr. Mad Mike. I think Yak-kid is kinda right. It was more than a fair assessment of FC’s recent postings in this forum (& not just this thread). He does seem like kind of a jerk. So what? Doesn’t mean he is, just seems like it. Why come to FC’s defense when the shoe so obviously fits? And on what planet does submitting a quality post negate acting like a jerk, anyway? I’m sure you think he’s a stand up guy, but in my short life I have come across many jerks, and my observation has been that most of them are that way because they are surrounded by people telling them how great they are. Who cares if the point is valid? Who cares if we agree with him? His delivery is what elicited Yak-kid’s response (and mine). The same point could have been delivered in a more thoughtful and constructive way had he wanted to. He’s capable of it.
So, why should I speak up against FC and the unofficial head of the CA militia (i.e., why am I all butt-hurt)? There are people out there who straight up refuse to take up the fly because of the elitist attitude that many long-stickers have. That’s a fact. It doesn’t have to be that way. That’s just sad. It would be nice if those with the knowledge used it to help rather than hurt. Look at some of the good examples on our very own CF Fly-Fishing Forum. In my opinion, Newman is hands-down the most helpful poster on this forum. When Newman writes, I read. And I make mental notes. We could all learn something from people like this. Personally, I am somewhat ashamed of myself (and us, as a collective group) for leaving the kid to carry the torch and point out the bad attitude.
By the way, IMO you don’t have to write some fancy post about catching some fancy fish in some fancy place while eating some fancy meal with grey poupon and some fancy dom perignon on the side of the river in order for it to be a great post. I’ve read some pretty good one-liners from scotty d that would get my nomination as one of the best. posts. ever. Oh, and before you get all butt-hu
Flatcasters post fly fishing with dad, was an awesome post and I’m glad he took the time to put it up! With that being said, as I said and as stated above he doesn’t give out a lot of helpful information and his post seems to me like he looks down on a lot of people on here a little bit because he may be a better fly fisherman, that just means he has more patience then us. I don’t know if he is truly a jerk or if I’m interpreting his comments wrong. It just seems to me like he’s acting like a jerk. It seems to me that when he gets on here its not posting a report very often or giving out helpful advice but degrading something said on this site. But with all that being that, let’s get down to what’s important. Fishing
MM: pretty sure I said unofficial leader, hollow title = no power. Darn the luck, right?
Seriously though, much respect and gratitude for being a man and taking the high road. That’s sorta what my whole post was about and I’m happy to witness it in practice. The way I see it, If I’m gonna call folks out, then I oughtta give them respect when they deserve it. Heck, I saw that even our old buddy flatscaster seems to have dropped out of curmudgen camp before summer’s end and gave some good old fashion helpful advice earlier. Not even a hint of venom in there! Great!
Carry on …
Grasshopper… I may have standards or whatever towards flyfishing… but the only person. I hold to them is me… that doesn’t mean I won’t make a wise crack here or there but its all in good fun…
Btw… I had a pretty good laugh about the militia comment… that was funny.

Although he doesn’t need any defending, I think a little background on fc and the rest of us older fly fisherman is in order. Back when fly fishing and walking a flat was “new” to some of us, we would all get on here and talk about a flat or a fly and how we, or maybe it was just me, screwed up a presentation and what we would do different next time, plan another trip and sometimes make some new friends. However, most of that information has disappeared from the web for a couple of reasons. The first reason was probably the lurkers who never contributed anything but were just here to poach information. The final straw were some of the newbies. Someone would take them to a flat, help them get started with the basics only to show up on the same flat later to find that it had been invaded by the same newbie and several of his buddies. Flats are limited and fly fisherman along with duck hunters must come from the same mold when it comes to keeping a “spot” as close to secret as possible. Flats and other fly fishing spots that had been talked about on here or shown to someone were quickly overwhelmed and that put an end to the info sharing and some of the goodwill. A lot of newbies now come on here and ask a bunch of questions without first utilizing the “search” function to see if it’s been answered before, which just makes the old guys even more cynical. Throw in someone dousing a fly in gulp scent or possibly in dog food juice and you get hammered…
A bunch, and I mean a bunch of good tail chasing flyfisherman don’t post their stuff here anymore and that has probably led to some postings by newbies that gets them pounded because the good stuff from those other guys is not on here for them to read and learn from. Most good flyfisherman have reached the “methods” stage of life, if fishing is anything like hunting, which means they are purists. I think a lot of people jump on fly fishing because it was, maybe still is, the new “cool thing to do” and not because they are ready to be purists. I’m not saying you have
