Why I do I waste my time with carp?

Well I tried again and these fish are smart. Went back home to Bamberg to my sister’s engagement party friday. I have permission to fish this huge pond that sits in between Bamberg and Orangeburg. The man said that there are some huge grass carp in the pond, but doesnt understand why I waste my time trying to catch these “trash fish” as he called them and I quickly came to the defense saying that any fish on the fly is a prize fish. Took some dog food to lure them in close enough to the bank. Within 10 minutes I had 3 giants breaking the surface. took a fly that closely resembled the dog food and left it still. One swam up to it then passed it onto other pieces. My patients finally ran out after 2 hours. Gotta try a different strategy.

good call. chumming with dogfood and dead drifting a purina chow fly with bait can’t be much more fun than it sounds.

the new Southern Culture on the fly has some grass carp goodness: http://www.southerncultureonthefly.com/scof_summer2012.html

Stick it out and post pics!

They are tricky. Once one spooks, they are done. They emit some kind of chemical that alerts the others to trouble. you need to be very quiet and stealthy. Make the longest cast you can. They will also eat a bread fly.
Probably have better chances in the winter when they do not have as much to eat.

Rub a lil mud on your leader to take any glare off ( Might be worth a try). Or use a fluro tippet which will sink below the surface…

I use a little brown Rainey’s Float Foam, egg hook(I guess) and a sack of fish food pellets. Been using this fly for 10 or 12 years and it’s caught a load of big Amur.

I bet that senyo’s lazer dub would make a good carp fly, I will pick some up and tie you one bulldog

goes home through the alley.

You should be ashamed of yourself. Do you soak that fly in a jar of gravy train before you toss it?

flatscaster, in with a low blow, haha, gotta give him credit best dog food looking fly I have seen

The day I give anyone credit for tying a good dog food looking fly is the day I’ll post pictures of me fishing gear on grass flats.

gah, not going to let me live that one down, surprised you didn’t give me a hard time the other day in Lowcountry Flyshop

Bulldog,

There are other (real) flies that you can try for Carp. Recently saw a copy of Orvis News that had a section on rigging for Carp, and they sell Carp flies. Six patterns are listed on their website at
http://www.orvis.com/store/product_directory_tnail.aspx?dir_id=1236&group_id=27977&cat_id=27978&subcat_id=27979

The flies don’t look too difficult to tie.

(Update: a search for Carp on FlyRecipes.com gives 31 patterns including Carp Assassin, Carp crack etc so there are plenty of alternatives to try for Carp)

Hope this helps.

Go Catch 'em - tight lines

I’ll attempt to catch anything with fins!
Now, where did you say you saw that mermaid …

Thanks snook. big help. I will look into that. Hurricane I gotta get you out there with me one day. Well have to take a trip when you have a day off. I’ll post a picture of the pond later.

Just use an olive wooly bugger… “carp” flies are over rated…

Like that pellet fly…Floating fish chow… very dun & easy prey for those sipping fish. Match that hatch !!!
Welcome to fly fishing 2012.

With the wooly bugger do you leave it in place or retrieve it? I read an article about grass carp a few days back. It mentioned that you want to leave the your fly still, that any movement spooks them.

Guess you commented on the dude in SCOF for using a grass fly on the “grass” hatch.

For the record I have had no more than 30 refusals on Murray with “traditional” flies…

Ease up a little…trying to help the guy notch one off the list.

carter Nelson got a HUGE one in the GCR on a 3wt with a little bugger under an indicator(im assuming it let it hang more natural) this thing is a stud…copy and paste

muahahaha
im assuming the only reason he got it in (besides the fact he has mad mad skills- guided Pres Jimmy Carter) is the 3wt…he said he was bream fishin and it hit…the tippet wouldve parted if it had been a stronger rod- like a expensive shock absorber

That video is bad ass.

I’ve landed all the pond fish on a 4wt St Croix…(**() fish would literally run out of pond.
Remember reading about Nelson in the old Warmwater Flyfishing mags…dude’s articles on big bluegill steered me in the right direction to deep water gills. My largest is a 12"er in dead winter.
