Wild Kingdom in Bulls Bay

Got out to Bulls bay at 1230 to shrimp the outgoing tide. Set poles and things looked very promising early. Got about a dozen or so per throw on the first two passes and then they shut off. Ended up with about 1/3 cooler of BIG shrimp.

However, the interesting part is the bycatch.

My buddy thought he coolered out on one throw as heavy as the net was until this. This is the biggest horsheshoe crab I’ve ever seen. He was successfully released back to the wild!

This little sucker was mean!

Puffer fish are so cool!

Cool

Those mantis shrimp can do some damage to your finger, careful messing with them. However, bonefish love em so I always have some mantis shrimp flies when I’m chasing bones in the Caribe.

What part of the bay did you try? Thanks

Caught a horseshoe crab in my net a few weeks ago. I was terrified thinking about how difficult it was going to be to get him out! After a few minutes he kind of worked himself out with minimal damage to the net… Now, if only I can find a good recipe for him

There ain’t one. I don’t think even the native Americans ate them.

I thought the local news had an episode of a local company using those for research. Is that a cracker net?

They definitely are used in in some research. I thought the special I watched said it was in the Maryland area. They would catch them bleed them and then release back to the wild. The show was on a couple years ago. they are pretty cool looking,I can remember seeing loads on the beach in Ocean City on family vacations. That was many many moons ago.

that’s a huge pufferfish! bass like those mantis shrimp too

I never heard reds like mantis shrimp…they must be easier to keep on the hook than regular shrimp…

I have heard that there is a research station that will buy the horseshoe , not sure where it is. Apparently they contain an enzyme that’s utilized for medicine. I recently caught a large one , didn’t know which was worse the horseshoe or garfish
