Commander, ride, or tarpon. Which one hasnthe best stability to stand? Anyone have specific preferences of one over the other? I know this has been the topic many of time before but looking for some advice and any new outlooks.

I have a Ride 135 and find it to be very stable. I know it has more stability than the Tarpon but not sure about the Commander. Someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly I am sure.

I have fished both and even though the commander is pretty comfortable and drier, I prefer the ride 135… Tarpons are good yaks but unless you are 5 foot nuthin and weigh 90 pounds they are not good standing yaks… YES it CAN be done but not by every one. As always the key to what kayak is good for YOU is for YOU to test paddle one and see how YOU like it… you may fall in love with the commander and think I am a nutcase but for ME I am not a huge fan of the commander…

The Commander has the best stability. The hull shape between the Commander and Ride are very similar. THe Commander advantage comes from standing 4 inches lower than in a Ride and having the ability to brace your legs against the gunwales.

I still prefer the Ride 135. I can take it anywhere.

X2 on the Tarpon being good for certain paddlers. I am 5’8 150# and I could stand comfortably in the 120 and 140. That said, trying to throw a 7’ net was not the easiest thing to do. While I do have good sea legs, it was limited more to standing and casting vs throwing a net for bait. Never paddled the commander or ride, but I do hear they are a much more stable platform with the hull design.

thanks for the info.

I’m 6’3" and weigh 200 and can easily throw a 6’ cast net from my Ride 135! Plus, you will love the seat. Very dry and comfy!

MarshMan - you need to check out the new seat for the Ride 135. It’s an improvement over the 2012 model. Softer, drier, and 6" elevation

What? There is a newer seat for the Ride? You had to go and say that, now I’ll want one. I thought the seat in my 2012 was pretty good. What is the difference in the new one and the 2012?

The new seat (which is can be added to the 2012 Rides) is much more breathable, easier to adjust, and stronger. It is also offered in what Wilderness Systems is calling the Advance Version, which is positioned about 6" higher than the standard seat. The Advance seat also has some built in tackle storage.

Either new seat can be purchased for $149. (If you bought a 2012 Ride from Time Out, and would like a new seat, we will set you up for $90)

I will have to come check that out Dave, sounds intriguing.

Worth every penny. Since I’m Wildy Team, I’m low on the totem pole for getting my own. Prepurchase customers and dealers come first.
