Winch strap snapped.

Have a 20 ft DC and had the winch strap snap about 2 inches behind the reinforced part that is sewn to the latch.

What’s the best way to fix:
Get it resewn?
Replace the entire strap and hook?
Other?

Sun exposure breaks down the stitching over time. I would replace the strap, maybe with a beefier one.

That’s pretty quick for a 14’. I would definitely buy a new one. If you keep it in the sun a lot, maybe get some of that sun protectant spray that is used on bimini tops and spray it down twice a season. Should help block some of the UV damage.

Also, too much weight when winching the boat up can wear them out. Maybe try driving the boat up onto the trailer, as well as keeping more boat in the water to float it on with the winch. If none of those are possible, some slick sticks will help if you have to manually slide the boat onto the trailer each time you take it out.

When mine broke I ended up replacing the entire winch assembly. Thing looked rough. 2 bolts.

Broke one on mine last week, tied a knot to the hook to complete the haul home( I have a chain and hook bolted to the winch riser) Glad I read your post, I had forgotten about mine! Need to go out and change it out after the darkness!

I do normally run the boat all the way up onto the roller before hooking the winch and then only have to make a couple cranks but yesterday, had a buddy helping me and I think he tried to use the winch to pull too much of the boat weight. It was going to happen sooner or later, glad we were already up off the ramp when it did.

Loop it back through the eye of the hook and tie a knot in it an roll on. Mine’s been that way for 4 years, works great.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

^^^ That will work as long as the strap is not rotten also. I have had them pop after being knotted if the strap itself was weakened as well.

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

changed mine out a couple of months ago. took forever to unwind the old one and put the new one on but then again; did not have much else to do at that time. i feel a lot better about the heavy duty one that i put on as a replacement. good to go for a good while now.

I’d rather spend a few bucks on a new strap than to see my boat on the ramp or road. I have been known to forget to hook the safety chain.

Lost my Carolina skiff in the middle of a 4 lane when I got my Tundra and was showing a buddy how it would take off the boat on the back! Broke the strap and forgot to hook the safety chain.
