wind and tails

went to a new flat monday afternoon and saw one red asap that was 30plus in with its back out of the water. it went deep saw 2 more in that size range but they wanted nothin to do with the copperhead.saw 5 or so more small ones and managed to catch one around 22in.also had a sheepshead around 3lb grab the copperhead but hook didn’t get in good.went to same place lastnight and only saw 2 small reds and couple sheeps.had 1 sheep take the gold spoon fly but hook didnt sink again.any suggestions on makin the hook get in would be great. i think that they are barly grabin it.tried the strip strike but didn’t work.guess ill keep trying.

Sharpen the hooks and stick with the strip strike. You’ll get a few that inhale a bunch of grass w/ the fly and don’t get the steel, but that’s the breaks. Sometimes you have to be patient and let them get a good bite on the fly, and sometimes it’s just the luck o’ the draw./

Sharpen and DE-barb those hooks…Don’t be afraid to set the hook with three good jabs–(waist high)…good luck and tight lines…

Sometimes you can get them by tying a stinger to the shank of your fly. It seems that Sheepshead sometimes mouth the fly but never get the hook, the stinger can sometimes get them. Also works with reds.

(By stinger I don’t mean any sort of treble hook just tie a small fly to the shank of your main fly and let it dangle an inch or so behind.)
