Wind

Wondering if the 10 - 15 mph NE wind in Charleston Friday night is going to be too rough to try the harbor? Any thoughts…

I have a 16 ft jon boat, so my rule is if the wind is over 10 mph you won’t find me out on the water, generally, esp. the harbor… but that’s just me

The harbor seems pretty rough if it’s over 5-10. I could probably head out that way a bit most times, but it’s a little rough for my wife in our 18’ CC. I guess it also depends on where you’re going.

I’m heading to beaufort sat morning from the upstate If the weather acts right how does the wind act on the board river? Is it protected or should I move into the creeks? Thanks

The Broad is a bear if it’s windy. Right now the forecast looks pretty good and it should not be too bad. I will be heading down that way from Summerville on Sunday for 3 days of shrimping, but not on the Broad. Got a little secret hole I’ve been hitting for the past 25 years with very good results and no competition.

Do you know how to get out to Dawes Island, on the Hilton Head Side? Go through the Rose Island Cut and head left staying 50-75 yards off the marsh. Be careful as it can be shallow in sections. If you do, you should try starting right at the end of the trees on Dawes, as deep as you can set up and head out. I have had some good luck there in past years. Don’t hesitate to try throwing the net every 10-15 minutes even before the sun sets. With a new moon coming up on Wednesday, the shrimp may be there an hour or more before sunset.

15 mph wind blowing against the tide is a rough lady there. Often rougher than the ocean. Blowing with the tide isn’t too bad. That river is a mile wide and has a fetch of about 15 miles. She can get ugly without much provocation.

I’m planning on going this weekend too Won’t be baiting though, a non-resident bait license is $500 [:0] I can catch shrimp without using bait just fine. Even in the daylight

So you thinking smaller rivers and creeks would be safer and smarter way unless the weather changes? Thanks

Yep. I’ll probably be around the Cheechessee or Colleton River somewhere. Maybe Euhaw Creek. Not out in the Broad if the wind is blowing.
