Windy day on the Stono -glad the trout were biting

Hit the Stono this morning at about 10 am to take a Wilderness Systems Commander for a test drive and chase a few trout in the process.
Conditions:
Chilly, Rainy, wind blowing 10-15, whitecaps on the river, waves at 1 foot and 1 second. basically pretty darn nasty out this morning.

Water was clear to 3 feet, not much boat traffic to stir things up. Tide was CRAZY high again, and at 10 am the tide was running one way and the wind the other causing waves to really stack up.

I didn’t want to chance swamping the boat out by myself s I stuck to the Wappoo Road side of teh river for a couple of hours. Picked at the trout with dead shrimp and doa’s under a popping cork. Missed a couple of good runs that could’ve been reds… no hookup, so no way to tell.

I caught a short break in the weather and crossed the river. The Commander doesn’t like punching straight thru chop and slop, but it takes waves really well anywhere from quartering to full abeam without any problems.

I worked the grass line as the wind decided to turn back on. I couldn’t slow my drift enough, so I only got to fish about 1 pocket in every 3. There were tons of dink trout around today. Caught and released several before Jordan showed up. Once he got there we set up on the lee side of a point and picked away at the trout for another 2 hours or so. Mud minnows under a popping cork produced the most strikes. Mud minnows on the bottom in 7-10 feet produced bigger fish.

best fish of the day was 17 inches.

I expect Jordan will post a report later today or maybe tomorrow.

Paddle back to the landing against both wind and tide dead in the face was a beast. Thought I was going to get washed down Wappoo cut for a minute when I had to slow down for a boat wake.
