Windy on the Wando

Yesterday I decided I would take advantage of the warm temperatures and predicted 10kt SW wind to find some fish on the Wando in the afternoon. I figured a perfect day; an afternoon low tide, several days into a warming trend, low winds, nobody on the water. Well everything was as forecasted except the wind, seemed like 15-20kts not 10kts. I ended up fishing some spots that I don’t usually fish to try to get out of the wind. First I tried some creeks off the Wando between the 526 and 41 bridge about 4 hours before the low tide, no bites. Next I tried any protected spot I could find on the river, behind oyster bars, behind grass lines, etc. I managed to find 5 reds that were willing to bite and got three to the boat, two over slot and one at 22". Water was very clear in these little spots and fish were fairly willing to bite (zman soft plastics rigged on a 1/8 oz jig.) Didn’t see any big schools in these areas. Next I tried a creek of a normally pressured flat behind an island and found a good size school of fish, maybe 50-75 fish. Only managed one out of this school as it was really windy, muddy and near the bottom of the tide. Ride home into the wind and chop was pretty rough and wet but a good day on the water.

Very complete report. Nice to, finally, hear of someone catching fish!

Based on my observations, in spring the forecasted wind is only applicable to 11 AM. After that add at least another 5kts.
