Hello, since the waters getting colder and the weather is changing just wondering some tips or suggestions you may have for the colder months of fishing here in Charleston and anything you have to offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

And once the water gets even colder and you think you a going slow enough, slow it down even more! Fish structure close and thorough, if you aren’t re-tying, you aren’t trying! As of right now though, live and cut bait are tough to beat. Good luck out there!
Also, welcome to the site!

When the water temp drops below 70, the fishing is going to be absolutely on fire. When the water temps get into the upper 50s and lower, make your retrieves super slow. In winter I will typically use Zman finesse jig heads with a Zman Slim Swimz. And when you think you are working it slow enough, go slower. The Slimz are worked in more of a let it hit bottom, then twitch the rod tip twice upwards, reel in your slack then repeat. Typically the bite will happen on the fall.

When I used to have time for fishing, the best days I ever had was in November and December. Someone (forget who) told me when I thought I was retrieving slow, I was still too fast.

Just so I’m clear, y’all are saying slow?

If PP can take a leak before you get a full crank on the handle, it’s too fast.

We got a ways to go on the slow
Thanks for all these tips, but I was also wondering if live bait, artificial, top water, etc. Which one works the best or really well for the cooler waters

Ain’t nothing slower than a piece of cut shrimp or mullet soaking on the bottom…slowly

Put lots of ice in the live well. That will slow them down, and won’t hurt em as much when you put the hook in their lips.

Live bait will always work since that is the primary feeding source. Artificials are all I fish with on my personal time. Topwater lures will definitely catch trout in winter. I would suggest using Zman Shroomz finesse jig heads mated with Zman Slim Swimz. These have proven deadly for trout and redfish in the winter. They have a ton of action for such a small bait and when worked slow, the fish don’t hesitate to hit it. EyeStrike jig heads mated with trout tricks or Zman Pogyz will also work well, but I prefer to drop my bait size in the cooler water.

My advise is to wear 2 gloves, ski mask long Johns hand warmer and always a life jacket.
This years seems a little slow in the Stono mainly because of water clarity. Went Wednesday and water temp was around 70 but couldn’t see my stainless steel prop in the water mid day. Till the water clears up, trolling will be slow.
