Winter Fly Selection

This will be my first time fly fishing in the fall/winter and was wondering what flies I should use? I had a blast stalking the flats this summer and am definitely hooked on that. Went sight fishing in some shallow water the other day and realized I should just use my fly rod for that too. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Dark clousers (minnow),merkins (crab),and toads (either) work well for me… usually #1 or #1/0hook, will go as small as #4 later in winter as fish get spookier. Like a 12ft leader in winter, going longer if its calm. Like flies with lots of action while sitting on bottom, think: marabou, rabbit, craft fur and rubber legs…

I concur with Capt. Newman. I like rabit and maribou in the winter, along with a little flash or tinsel that moves/breaths even when the water is barely moving.
