Winter Grouper

How close do shallow water grouper come to shore in the wintertime. I know they move in to spawn but I wasn’t sure how close.

What does it matter…you cant keep them.

What general locations off of Charleston are good for grouper?

In the winter they load up every decent piece of bottom including the Charleston 60 but they don’t really eat so don’t expect to catch them fishing.

40’ for me. If you fish the right rig and bait you can catch them shallow

Exactly…

We had some of our best days in the winter on the ledge…too bad the Govt took that away:frowning_face:

Grouper close Jan 1 - May 1. In December the Gags are quite common in 65’. You won’t see many large fish shallow, with most being just legal (24").

What would the right rig/bait be?

Both gag and scamp were open in 2012 from May 1 to Dec 31. Only half of the recreational quota was caught. I doubt the data will change much this year. See link below for catch data.

And you really think those Jackoffs at the SAFMC have a clue as to what has been landed by recreational fisherman? When was the last time anyone you know was surveyed? Remember these are the same court jesters that think Sea Bass were overfished, and now that they had a closure they are high fiving each other over the “rebuilt” stock. A room full of monkeys could make better decisions than these fools that earn a nice check from going to all these meetings in such terrible places like St Simon Island, Amelia Island, Savannah, Charleston, Morehead city…

Precisely,
Every time I hear that trash it’s coming from an Anti. I’m sure we should be taking advice from them…because they certainly have our best interests at heart (sarcasm). If they have any data at all (questionable), then it’s usually from Florida. My opinion…separate SC and NC off from FL and GA in the SAFMC scheme. We need our own reps and our own REAL data. Preferably run by our own DNR. Otherwise these lies or half truths will continue to be perpetr

How come when they say we went over our ACL, they snatch it from next years ACL? But when we come in at half, they don’t give it back for this year??? Seems pretty unfair, but then again the enviros will never give us what is rightfully ours.

Have said jerkoffs indicated when they are going to close down the healthy BSB fishery…??

I was just looking on the NOAA website at ACL’s and it seemed to show that the BSB would be open June 1 to May 31, does this mean we have a year round season so long as the ACL isn’t met?
