deer season ends jan 15 in georgia, but small game season lasts until feb 28 on the WMA i hunt and georgia allows you to hunt hogs with archery and muzzleloaders during small game season on WMA lands…so needless to say im interested especially after killing one and finding more on my trail camera. anything special to hunting them in the wintertime or hunt the same area ive found them now? cant bait for em but what will they mostly eat during winter when the acorns have been gobbled up and no green vegetation to speak of?
not really sure. corn works good, lol. maybe stick to rich/moist soils like in swamp/hardwood bottoms. they seem to root around in the swamps and ditches a good bit.
If you have an area that has hog sign, take a of gallons of diesel fuel and a shelve. Scratch up the soil and pour the diesel around. Give it a try.
I’ve heard that before, but it can’t be very “Environmentally friendly”. I’m not a super conversationalist or anything but I go out of my way to “leave no trace” so to speak. If you really believe the smell attracts them can’t you put it in a small bucket and put something over it with some holes in it so that the smell get’s out, but nothing tries to eat it, drink it, bathe in it, etc.?
Corn oil poured in the ground works about as good as corn.
Years ago, before we worried much about the environment, we would soak burlap bags in old motor oil and diesel then nail the bag around the base of a tree. Hogs love to rub on the oil.

FInd somewhere with good hog sign and do exactly what everyone’s said. Corn is pretty key and I’ve had really good luck with a timed feeder. If I have a feeder going off at 6 in the afternoon for a good while near pig sign they get pretty used to it. Got to where I can sneak in about 5-530 and pigs will come out within 30 minutes of feeder going off almost every time. Lots of weird things people do to attract pigs (since they’ll eat just about anything) so I guess I’ll add something off the wall I’ve seen work. Worked in Texas this summer and we had a co-worker who would dump out remains of watermelons we ate during work, and pigs would be all over it in less than 2 days.

only problem is this is a wma and cant bait there…
ONN, I have killed several (over a dozen) by just walking oak ridges after deer season in Ga. (Burke Co). This was with a bow as that was all you could use in this area.
More times than not, I heard them rooting around before i ever saw them. Pretty easy to slip up on when they are making that much noise if you stay upwind. Never killed anything huge. 150 at the most, which was fine with me. Most around 80 or so. Never used bait, BTW.
I got out of this, like with most anything else, what I put in it. That was a lot of walking/scouting.
One more thing, I had more luck mid day. Have went early and walked up on them bedded and they spooked as I did not see them. Thankfully, they did not wake up pissed off and just ran.
Good luck!

ha pissed off is the only way ive ever dealt with hogs! im hunting glynn county but im sure its the same layout/idea. i actually got an invite to come spotlight hunting at night at one of the area clubs no cost to me if im just out cleaning up hogs so ill at least look into that but walking around would be beneficial to me getting to see more of the area and hopefully more deer spots later down the road. georgia allows bow and muzzleloader for hogs during small game so ill bring one of those and my 10" bowie knife in case 1 gets a little angry. no problem with 80-150 those taste just fine and are easier to drag out.
I have been fortunate to not be attacked when hunting them.
Was awhile back, but with that said, if you are in stealth mode as I was, when I shot with the bow they didn’t realize where I was.

Sweet foods(fruit etc) and most other food or anything that is edible to them will work. No expert at hog hunting, but they eat anything and everything
never been attacked, but they dont tend to be very happy when cornered with dogs and the 1 i just got i had to finish off. ill have to give the walking around a try sounds fun

What would be the result if you hunted w/ bow and carried a sidearm instead? Sounds safer to me, but would hate to get in trouble for firearm during bow season or something dumb like that.
I have heard what those critters do to folks, I would prefer to have a little more distance than a 10" knife could afford me
I’ve killed more than 10 by walk and stalk. Find heavy trail and follow it. Sometimes you can smell them if you’re downwind. If you shoot with bow, you can pick off one or two, then flank them if you know where they’re going and get a couple more. BTW I hunt them with a bow and sidearm. I’ve finished a couple off with the .40cal - one took two to the head after an arrow got one lung and spine… Tough little buggers!
Yeah, I’d be taking a sidearm not a 10" knife. Not saying a knife is not usefull, but I would rather deal with the D&R consequences of defending myself with the gun, if they attacked than trying to fend them off with a knife!
Guys, I’d really like to give hog hunting a go. I talked with the folks at Santee Coastal Reserve b/c I was thinking about trying there, but they said they’ve had a pretty extensive hog eradication program the past couple of years that has actually worked. So, I’m in search of a place to hunt them. I don’t have $350+ to hunt them on a plantation, so I’m sort of stuck with public lands. I was looking at Woodbury and Wee Tee WMAs, but all of the WMAs are pretty big. Also heard that Francis Marion has a lot of hogs, but it is huge!! I would be grateful if someone could point me in the quasi-narrowed direction of where to find the piggys on a WMA. PM me if you are willing to help a man out. Heck, if I get one I’ll hook you up with some pork! Thanks yall.
One of my clubs is infested and they are nocturnal. They come between 10pm and 3am. They frequently eat all my corn and then take a nap on the corn pile.
From what I’ve read, you can hunt them at night on private land…if you can stay awake!
Well I spent about half the day at Wambaw today and no hog to show for it. I didn’t start hunting until about 1:30 because twin ponds range was closed and I had to drive to boggy head to sight in my rifle. Anyhow, I saw a lot of sign in the ditches along the roads. I walked both upland pine areas and cypress/hardwood swampy areas. Most of the sign I saw was in the swampy areas but I never heard or saw a single hog. What am I doing wrong? Is a certain time of day better? Should I have ventured deep into the swamp? The signs I saw were very fresh so I couldn’t have been too far from them. Do they range much? I can’t find a lot of useful info on the web about hunting them because most of that stuff is just folks sitting over a feeder waiting on the hogs to come to them.
im def no expert myself having only killed 3 (2 knife 1 rifle) but the 1 i shot was very shortly after sunup and i was sitting in my climber stand in my deer spot that has plenty of hog sign too. im gonna experiment with walk and stalk this year if i can make it out much. small game season in georgia wmas you can take bow or front stuffers for pigs. MUCH better than .22 or shotgun with 2 or smaller in fm during small game!!!
