Winter Kayaking

A nice article for anyone kayaking during the Winter.

“Apathy is the Glove in Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.

I have a question for all:

The article mentions having an emergency paddle. Does everyone carry one? What type do you have? Where do you keep it?

Actually that’s three questions, sorry!

I always carry a spare paddle

When you have practiced falling out of your kayak with the tide running + wind blowing you will see how you can get separated from your paddle very easily even when they float ? one can use a paddle leash but I get it tangled up all the time

With our Stealth kayaks under deck storage I carry an extra full size paddle ? you can use a single blade with an extendable handle

I also pack a 2nd dry bag with complete change of dry clothes +++

Never have had to use the 2nd paddle or the 2nd dry bag yet ? But I know they are handy!

You will only ever need a spare paddle or dry clothes when you don’t have them. I have a collapsible, single blade paddle I keep in the hull storage area. I won’t get anywhere fast but it should be enough to allow me to paddle and get to get to my regular paddle.

One the side mount. My main paddle stays on my lap even anchored incase a seahag shows up.

Good idea to carry a spare.

Is a wet suit worth wearing while fishing?

I always keep a spare in the hull. In the winter I also have a full set of extra clothing with a towel in a dry bag just in case. I have never needed it but when I do it will be there.
