Anyone ever try any nightime fishing and/or bait catchin this time of year? I’m getting on the water one way or another this weekend even if it comes to having to go sat night. Looks like upper 50’s for a low.
If I do go at night I’ll bring along the hydroglow and see what happens. Worse case, I may troll some plugs at the upper end.
I’m thinking threadfins should be easy to catch, but not sure about the herring?..anyone tried?
You may want to look in the coves around Acapulco. I caught some herring years ago this time of year one cove up from Acapulco cove on the south side toward Ramp 3 in 20 feet of water. Worth a try. If not, threadies are very plentiful up there; however, you need to cull out every netfull to get 3 to 4 inchers worth using in a 5 gallon bucket. To save hassle, I would stop by David’s for a couple dozen.
As you know I fish nights almost exclusively. This winter has been horrible for me. I haven’t caught a keeper in a while, . By the time I leeve work, got the boat, bait and launched it was already 7:00. I’ve gone out and caught them in the morning 2 weeks ago and went to the same area that night and couldn’t find fish. I’ve fished from Rocky creek up both river and haven’t caught a fish. I haven’t been pulling any bait to the surface in a while either. Last winter I did ok at night, not as good as the day. But I always got a few. I was actually going to go fish the lower lake tomorrow night but my pass was revoked due to a poker tournament Saturday. Probably wondering why I would bother, but I’d rather fish and get nothing than not fish at all. And nights are usually my only free time.
I agree with Fogman on one cove up. Several years ago we caught some very nice keeper stripers in about 25’ of water in that same cove. That is until the bird chasers came in on on us and one poor freeline fisherman. I think they probably cut two or three of his lines running and gunning past him in that narrow cove. They just can’t seem to come in low and slow. Generally running and gunning scatters the schools and at best they might get one or two fish before they’re spooked.
Also, some friends almost always had good results night fishing for stripers near the mouth of Stinking (Stinker) creek and the “old mountain” in Bear creek. Back then they used the old Coleman lanterns at each end of a john boat.
