I usually dont winterize other than the usual gas treatment because I try to use my boat all year. I generally boat all year long, however in December and January it may only be one day that month. I try to crank my motor every two weeks to keep the upper cylinders lubricated and my question is , is that sufficient? I look forward to your comments.
May sound too simple but I have 98 rude 115 that I only put STP gas treatment in, but no ethanol gas and run it to the nearshore reefs 2 or 3 times between Jan&March, smokes likes hell but works good for me. I should use it more but the ocean doesn’t seem to agree and I go in the little boats in the creek this time of the year instead.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
just keep the motor trimmed down when on the trailer
keeps water from collecting in places to freeze
ok had not thought of that part. any advice on fogging or not fogging?

I think that due to our location in the South that Chris is saying that is all you need to do to winterize. Temps don’t get too low in these parts.
If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

I have a '99 Yam 115. I typically just flush and clean it well, run some fogging oil into the carb (just to add a little corrosion protection), and then store it with trim down so it drains well. I also connect a battery maintainer or pull the battery out altogether. I take it to shop for an annual tune-up to start the next season and run problem free all spring/summer/fall (knock on wood!). I have occassionaly skipped the fogging with no issues. Also, I always add fuel stabilizer with each gas fill (sometimes sits a few weeks between use) and give it another extra shot before I store for the winter.
I have never winterized my boat in 15 years here. I try to use it at least once a month. Otherwise I just do general maintenance. Non ethanol gas helps.
Fogging a 2 stroke is asking for disaster!!

If you make statements like this you need to explain why. Otherwise it is non-value added.
I would say that if you are going to fog that you replace the plugs when you dewinterize so they do not prematurely foul from the oil. Most older (carbed) 2 strokes should have plugs replaced yearly as good maintenance so it isn’t a big deal or added cost.

My main point is that in a 2 stroke, your only source of lubrication in the cylinder head is your two cycle oil. If you fog the motor, you are interfering with that process. Even though fogging is introducing oil into the cylinders, it may not play nice with the 2 cycle oil and cause a failure on one or more cylinders. All one needs is to lower the lower unit to keep it from pooling water and freezing and then change your spark plugs once a year just because it’s a good idea. Also change the lower unit oil yearly.

if you plan on leaving any motor stored (2stroke fourstroke boat motorcycle car, etc)
for any length of time, it is a good idea to use some type of “fogging” technique
it will not harm a 2 stroke to spray fogging oil into the intake at low rpms.
the fogging oil coats the inside of the cylinder walls as well as all the other shiny metal parts that will rust if exsposed to air and moisture.
Thanks Chris, most people don’t winterize their outboard around here anyway. Glad you could straighten me out.

Probably another simple question, but would be running 2x the oil mix thru the motor be the same as fogging? I have run this mixture when motors were new and again when I had the rude 115 rebuilt and it ran fine but I do change plugs once or twice a year as it seems to help when slow trolling for kings. I also run a little marvel mystery oil thru my 25 Johnson,85 Johnson&115 Rude, 2 or 3 times a year, don’t know if it helps these 2 strokes, but the old man used to do it and his seemed to run pretty well and he only used his during hunting season.

thanks guys, my motor is a new 2012 and not 2 stroke. but for the sake of conversation this time of year anyway, carry on.
