Winterizing??

Hey guys, I’ve been told a few different things and wanted to get the majority opinion here. Do I need to do anything to winterize my boat? I have Scout 26 with twin yamaha 150’s. I know outboards are different and I didn’t winterize my Suzuki 175 last year on my 21 and it was fine. I did wrap the motor with a comforter during the really cold nights just as a precaution. While many ppl tell me I don’t have to do anything I know I did have a block crack on an inboard 3yrs ago from not winterizing (yes I know they are different) but still. don’t really have the cash to replace 2 engines! any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

Other than changing the oil (in 4-strokes) and the foot oil in all motors. Long-term you should also treat the fuel and fog the engine. You only need to leave the motor down for a few minutes after use/flushing to drain all the water out of the block. Putting a trash bag over the prop is a good idea to keep rain from accumlating in the exhaust hub and possibly cracking the lower unit should we experience a sustained hard freeze. (With the weather these days you can never tell…)

as loosewire said, I would simply leave the motor trimmed down, to keep water from settling. and I also suggest changing the gear oil, because if for somereason, you have a leaking seal, and were to get water inside the gearcase, it could freeze and damage the gearcase, and that wouldnt be covered under warranty

Hey I had the 262 Abaco with twins. All above comments are correct, but don’t forget to put pink RV antifreeze through your fresh water system. Fresh water freezes way before saltwater. Yor OB will be fine.

Thanks guys!
