I’m heading up to Winyah Bay next weekend to see a friend. I was going to take my flats boat with me. Anyone know how different the fishing is up there? Any advice would be nice. Not asking for specific spots but if someone has been successful in a region that would be helpful too. Thanks for the input.
You say up there. Where are you from and how are you used to fishing?

I’m from Charleston, and I usually fish for redfish and trout out of upper wando in awendaw.

Thanks CajunLad V for the PM. Anyone else got any advice?
Trout bite is on right now with all the shrimp that is in the bay . Catch you some live shrimp and fish grass lines in back of muddy bay you should do fine .
Mtodd, sent you a pm.

I tried to fish Muddy Bay up that way once. I’d been warned about how shallow it was and rough to navigate. But I was told the creeks on the other side were full of big redfish. So we crossed it very slowly. When we hit the creeks they were full of dolphins and the wind was picking up. We didnt get a bite. The ride back was awful. The wind was howling and that shallow water had waves coming over the bow of our skiff. I was soaked, freezing, and skunked. I think it soured me on that area forever.

Ha ha…Dude…That place can be feast or famine. You can get your arse kicked in the wrong wind and current. One time isn’t enough unless you get real lucky. Fishing can be great, you just have to learn it, and avoid it in the wrong conditions.
I agree with Redstripe…you never know what you are going to get up there. Just like flipping a coin.
Any new area is like flipping a coin. If you put the time into learning it you will be pleasantly surprised at how good our fishing is here in Georgetown.
Redstripe is spot on. I love Georgetown, its one of my favorite areas to fish. Redfish bite has been good around the feeder creeks. If you go into mud bay you will have no problem at high tide but I would be outta there when the tide gets around 1 1/2 ft, until you learn it. Lots of ghost crab traps around Pumpkinseed Island stuck in the mud. If the wind is right with an incoming tide I like to fish Mother Nortons Shoal. At and around low fish the shell banks just off channel, by mud bay. If its real windy I would put in at south island ferry, several creeks south of there that are fishable in windy conditions. Have a big stick ready, I’ve seen lots of tarpon lately.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone. It looks like I have my work cut out for me. Everyone has me a little nervous, talking about the wind, how hard it is to navigate, and etc. I have a flats boat that can run in 1ft of water with the motor trimmed. I guess I should be fine. My buddy said there is a landing off 17 near sampit river. I was going to try to head to the north inlet from there. How far is the drive? I am probably thinking it can get a little choppy going across the bay.
Ni is a great place. Use Jones Creek to get in. The bite has pretty good, lots of rat reds. All the big fish I’ve caught have been around the bay though, not ni.
