Headed down with my Skiff next week. A high school buddy that lives that way told me to check out Winyah Bay and Jones Creek. From what he tells me and what I’m reading, it’s a dangerous trip. Can anyone suggest a good route or somewhere to get a good map?
I’d find someone with experience to follow for your first trip.
Go slow at mid tide so you can see the bars in jones creek. It’s not a horrible trip really.
It’s not bad at all. Most people including myself run Jones creek wide open. There are some spots that if you come off plane you will bottom out. Jones creek is navigable at low tide and that would be a good time to go for your first time so you can see all the oyster bars. I was hesitant at first but there is really nothing to it.
The best advice is to follow someone. And yes those of use who are use to it can run it wide open all though I do not recommend that to someone who has never been through Jones creek. If you do go alone stay to the right going in and to the left going out. best tip I can give . Good luck
We made the slow cross across the bay. By the time we got into the creek, there was a dolphin shadowing us…so we figured no fish.
We got away from him and the wind picked up…big time. We fished for about 2 hours up and down the creek.
No luck…at all.
We came out of the creek and the bay was angry. Long WET ride home in our little skiff.
Thanks for the tips. We will be back to try again.
