Wiring 36v Trolling Motor

I have ordered a 36v minn kota trolling motor. My boat is wired for a 24v and has 1 neg. and 2 pos., I haven’t received the motor yet so I haven’t seen any instructions(would like to have it somewhat figured out when I receive it). Any recommendations on wiring this up? I know how to do the simple wire in series one negative and one positive, its the second pos. that I am unsure about. Thanks

3 batteries line up ±,±,±
1st neg to 2nd pos
2nd neg to 3rd pos
1st pos and 3rd neg go to trolling motor and produce about 37 volts
you only need 2 short jumper wires to connect the batteries
none of the new minn kotas require the 3 wire set up

hey chris; how about the steps to wire up a 24v system. do you do the same thing? ie…first + to second Neg and then what? thanks

connect pos-neg on the batteries one short jumper … then pos and neg to trolling motor.

leave out the 3rd battery

chris; ya think? i know that you only use two batteries. (hence the 24 volt question) LOL just wanted to make sure that i had it right. also; when i go to charge the batteries do in need to disconnect all of the wires? thanks.

I think the 2nd positive wire in your boat is there in case you want to use a motor that switches from 12V to 24V with a switch on the motor. I don’t know if there are any new motors that do that, but the old Motorguides I used to have did. The one I have now does not. Anyway, just trace the positive wires and make sure that you know which one you’re hooking up to the battery, and hook that one up to the motor and ignore the other one (cap it off to prevent it from wicking up water and corroding).

if you are using a a regular 12volt charger, you shouldnt have to disconnect the batteries
they are still only linked with the middle wire.
what i meant by leave out the 3rd battery, was in my description of how to wire it.
24-36-48, all the same technique, just keep adding batteries
