Wiring Trolling Motor

I had a 24 volt trolling motor. I have a small boat, so I am trying to hook up a new smaller 12 volt trolling motor. I have two batteries in the bow compartment, so I purchased a battery switch. Where should I mount the switch? Is it O.K. to mount it exposed to salt spray in front of my side console?

Would one battery be enough for a 55 pound thrust trolling motor on a 14 ft fiberglass bay boat? I would like to be able to fish for a couple of hours. If one battery is enough, I can forget the switch and make my boat 50 pounds lighter.

Sorry about my original “fat-finger” reply, which had nothin’!!! You should be fine with one deep-cycle 12volt battery if you are sure to keep it charged to capacity. I’m assuming you have a separate starting battery onboard.

Yes, I have a separate starting battery. Thanks for your input.

I just wired up my 24 volt system. U may not get much running time with the 12 volt.Just try not to power it up on high speed.Get a real good deep cycle battery.

One more option would be to continue to use both batteries. I believe you can connect (positive to positive) and (neg. to neg.) and still have 12 volts. This should give you a lot more run time before needing to recharge. It’s always a good idea to have more run time/power than less.

with a 14’ stinger and a 55# thrust T/M, you will be fine with 1 good deep cyclre battery
