Went to check my group of solo toms that I have been keeping close tabs on for about 3 1\2 weeks now and one bird obviously got removed from the group on youth day because Sunday for the first time these birds weren’t roosted together and one bird gobbled for over an hour and a half trying to regroup the ■■■■■. Had high hopes for this morning but apparently some knuckle head felt it was a smart plan to bust up the ■■■■■ yesterday afternoon. Worse case scenario, birds were bumped completely out that block so I learned this morning. Well that is a total of 6 longbeards that have been bumped in the past 7 days before the season ever opened. Gotta love public land!!!
Toms naturally become very territorial around now and separate into their own areas. you may find a few jakes together - but the mature toms become more solitary in their quest for hens
How on earth have you come to the conclusion that someone busted all these turkeys . You realize the do travel? Hell I saw one on highway 17 run over yesterday trying to fly across.
Every year we hear someone accuse others of scaring “their” turkeys away. There was one guy back during deer season, that said he had found a huge ■■■■■ of turkeys and knew where he was going hunt come turkey season! WRONG!! If your going to hunt , you should learn about your quarry.
Ya’ll are mean.
I thought we were being helpful
flyinghigh, natureboy and salty849 , three fellas that don’t hold back and will bring you back to reality,in a heartbeat.haha.Splitail ,stop crying and just get out there and get your bird. That’s how it is in the gubment woods.Looking forward to seeing the pics.
The one thing I avoid in pre season scouting is letting a gobbler hear a fake hen call. I use owl, crow and a loud goose call to locate. I don’t want a tom to hear my hen calls until there’s lead & powder in the gun.
You educate a tom when he hears a fake call and he comes running and there’s no hen - just an ugly old white man
Sorry guys for the misconception, apparently my topic is putting words into your mind that was never typed, said, nor discussed. These birds were bumped by something other than me. They were solitary old birds that had fellowship on their minds rather than fancy feathers. They didn’t want any galfriends. They were never aware of my presence due to any sort of calling period. I just care about were they roost and what they do after flydown. Up until youth day it was like clock work. Then a set of human tracks showed up and the whole routine got destroyed. I appreciated those accusations of people not bumping these birds but apparently those that say so haven’t been hunting birds in my area as long as I have nor seen what happens when constant human disturbance takes place. Oh well, maybe I will luck out and get another day in the woods down the road. Hope the toes that just got stepped on heal and have more educated comments in the future.

quote:Well, thanks for clearing that up. Also, I didn’t realize that gobblers would get so old that they weren’t interested in hens. I thought they were going after hens until they died. I have a grandson that’s a turkey hunter, I’ll pass this info on,thanks and good luck.

The NTWF should be called to observe and record the life cycle of these unusual sexless turkeys that don’t follow the seasonal norms that have been studied for years! This could be a huge breakthrough in our present knowledge of wild turkey behavior. Since they don’t care about girls, they would be nearly impossible to hunt. Why would they come to a hen call? Perhaps these rare turkeys are gay?
Also the NTWF should enlist the advice and special understanding that splittailbasics possesses
Maybe he uses the rare fellowship gobble call. I’m going to have to check into this.
