Requirements Change for Saltwater Recreational Fishing License

The recent session of the South Carolina General Assembly made changes to the Saltwater Recreational Fishing License effective July 1, 2009. License fees will not change.

The changes to the South Carolina Saltwater Recreational Fishing License will allow better access to information about recreational catch, which will lead to better management of South Carolina’s valuable marine resources. The changes also ensure that anglers in S.C. will simply need to purchase a single license to fish anywhere in both state and federal saltwaters. Revenue generated from Saltwater Recreational Fishing License sales will be used for the direct benefit of South Carolina’s marine recreational fisheries.

Currently a saltwater recreational fishing license is required for people:

Harvesting oysters or clams

Fishing for finfish from a private boat or transporting catch in a private boat.
The new legislation will require a saltwater recreational fishing license for people who also:

Recreationally fish from shore (beach, bank, private dock, free public pier, etc.)

Recreationally harvest shrimp and/or crab
You may purchase a license by telephone 24 hours a day 7 days a week by calling toll free 1-866-714-3611 or by going online.

There are a few exceptions that will allow people to harvest marine resources without a saltwater recreational fishing license including, fishing off a licensed commercial public fishing pier, fishing off a licensed for-hire vessel (charter and headboats), fishing with 3 or fewer fold-up traps, fishing with 3 or fewer drop nets, fishing with 3 or fewer handlines with a single bait and no hooks (chicken necking) and taking shrimp over bait (still required to have Shrimp Baiting License).

A resident of South Carolina sixty four years or older may obtain a statewide lifetime hunting and fishing license which includes the privil

i like it and dont like it.

likes - i like it b/c there are lots of people that fish regularly from shore that dont have a license that take a lot of fish

of course the revenue will be good i suppose (lets see if its policed at all)

dislikes - there will probably be lots of kids that now wont get to fish while they are here (on vacation, beach etc) who’s parents wont go to the trouble to buy a license while they are here. they probably woulnt catch anything anyway but the thrill and anticipation is what brings us all back

i suppose there is no perfect world

what he said!

Is there a minimum age for kids or does anyone, regardless of age, need a license?

I bet they police this one. There’s a lot of money to be made with them fines and with all the budget cuts they should police the heck out of this!

I think 16 and over you need a license.

It will clean off the bridges and non-comercial piers. The illegals will probably not be aproached because that is not the state’s problem, or there is no jurisdiction. I might be in a bad mood tonight, but how much is ten bucks?

it might clean up Leeds Ave a little bit. Getting DNR to actually write tickets will be a different story but it is a step in the right direction.

No one knows if YOU are THE village IDIOT or not until YOU open your mouth and speak!!!

One of the major drivers behind this was that the feds were trying to impose a federal fishing license on the state on top of your state license (much like duck hunting). The feds were looking at a $10-$25 range license that would have been in addition to your $10 state issued license. Trust me, it’s MUCH better to keep the money in the state.

skinne, it won’t end here. the feds will be back for ‘theirs’ just a matter of when.

Probably right, but rather later than sooner...

Hey, does anyone want to guess where your “HMS Permit” (aka “Tuna Permit” money goes?)… Bluefin tuna research??? Law enforcement??? Anyone???

Answer: NONE OF THE ABOVE… Here is what the feds are doing with your $22 each year:

https://hmspermits.noaa.gov/FAQs.asp

Q: What do I get when I pay for my permit?
A: Unlike many state permit programs, the permit fees go directly to the General Treasury and not to the managing agency (NMFS). The fee is set, in accordance with the procedures of the NOAA Finance Handbook, to recover the cost of administering the permit program, including maintenance of the public website and the toll-free phone system.

SWEET!!! Our permit money goes into the website and toll free number to… take our permit money!!!
