I was running out to the end of the north jetti kinda bumpy on the way out not really but for my 19ft Pathfinder I took a few decent hits. When I stop at the first Bouy outta the rocks the control will not go back into Neutral and thus will def not go back into reverse. No matter how hard I force it it refused to go back down into N. I knew that was bad and ran back to shem. The motor ran back fine but once I shut my motor down to take the cowl off she wont start again because the control wont get back to neutral. I tore down the Yam 704 controler as much as possible back at the ramp (Thanks Capt Jimmy) and it seemed fine and in working order. I assume its the cables from the controller to the motor, since the arm on the motor is clean moving and intact. Does anyone know how to replace these or clean them or trouble shoot them in general?? What could be causing this??

Sounds kinda like what happened to my boat a few weeks back. Guys at the shop said a bolt came out… Where? Somewhere deep in the engine. They said when they dug for the bolt, they found out the part that charges the batteries was fried. They fixed reverse and put a new charging regulator into my F100 Yamaha and it runs like a top again.

UPDATE: I disconnected the controller from the engine and the controller and cables work fine. It is something in the engine keeping it from shifting out of forward and into Neutral or reverse. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot from here would be awsome.

I had the same thing happen after I replaced my water pump in my 140 Johnson last summer. When I was reconnecting the shift linkage on the motor, I “missed” the hole. The result was the upper linkage (the part the control cable is connected to) was sitting on top of the gear selector rod/linkage that went to the lower linkage, essentially “pushing” it down into F without being able to pull it back up.
I’m not familiar with your motor, but trace the piece of linkage the cables attach to (on the motor) and try to find where they are supposed to “join” with the selector rod that goes into the lower unit. Have someone wiggle the contols while you peer under the powerhead. Mine is dead center, under the carbs, and is a royal pain to get to. You probably need one of those long spring-loaded grabber things (what I used) to recover the bolt & stick it back into the hole, then a long screwdriver to tighten it–assuming you can get to it at all w/o some dissassembly. Chris V would know exactly where the linkage union is.

Rebel I assume that is what it is I looked down the linkage to the selctor rod nd while I cant find the missing bolt or broken linkage there is a washer loose under the linkage so I guess that must be it. I would love some more input, if anyone has ever dealt with this on a yammi

probably a simple linkage issue
if you call me ahead of time and bring it by the shop, I will be glad to look at it with you.
i will give you the best info i can without seeing it
where the shift cable attatches to the engine, is a little cotter pin
remove that
grab the nub that the shift cable was attatched to, and see if you can shift it back and forth
you may need to spin the prop with your foot
I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com
Chris Thanks!! I detached the cables from the motor and grabbed the peice it was attached to and it doesnt want to move to N or R. Must be something jammed up in the linkage or the selector. Ill bring the motor by ya as soon as I can right now im as broke as GM.

i had a slight bind in my shifter and it was because of cheap lower unit oil that got old…it was effecting the oil driven cone clutch. Might be worth checking out. I used the yamaha grade lower unit oil from here on out. Worth a shot. May be a cheaper fix than expected
